I strongly disagree with the Abbot here, Scottish independence will help the Tories for one thing!

Irrespective of whether Abbot was right or wrong to intervene, Tora is quite correct. Except in a very bad year, without the Scottish Labour MPs. the Tories would enjoy a natural majority in England.
I'd have thought that perpetual government of one side or another would be a disaster for the country and for the party that's in office. But actually it's been shown that in many elections the Scottish vote hasn't decided things one way or the other; without Scotland the Conservatives would have been thrashed in 1997, 2001 and 2005, just as they actually were.
Yes, jim, but for some inexplicable reason the UK ends up with a Labour government from time to time. It's a bit like making the same mistake over and over again, expecting the outcome will eventually be different.

The new generation, unacquainted with the horrors of the past, can be excused in their naivety and ignorance, but those who have experienced a Labour government should know better.

So it was in the Blair years - they thought things would be different. Blair bamboozled them into thinking they were. But then along came Gordon Brown.
In 1997 the "inexplicable reason" was surely that the eighteen-year-long Conservative government had outstayed its welcome and was no longer fit for purpose. Which is precisely the point. It might be hard for Tories to accept but they need Labour to be capable of challenging them in elections. And vice versa.
I agree with jim in that a good opposition makes a good Government. If a Government does not think the opposition will ever win then it becomes lax or starts pushing through unpopular or extremist laws/rules.

Blair won the election a) because after a long period of Tory rule people were ready for change and b) tony was a closet Tory, at least in his rhetoric, and he certainly was a major capitalist !!
Unfortunately his Chancellor was no such thing, youngmaf.
