same reason as people buy not-so-real-looking dolls, I expect. Detailed accuracy always adds to the appeal of things - look at how realistic video games have got.

Tilly, I fear that may be one possibility .... you can cosset these "babies", keep them by your bed, and so on.

I read an article in the Guardian magazine last year about some of the people who buy these. Apparently they can be customised to have particular colour eyes and hair. All the couples had cots, prams, high chairs and all the paraphernalia that goes with babies.
I found it very sad to read.

IMO they are too posh to be bought for a child, they are "works of art".

That is so sad, using the doll as a child substitute.

I know someone who makes 'reborn' babies and they even breathe and some can stir in their 'sleep'- she charges a huge amount of money for them and a lot of skill goes into making them, all of their hair is rooted into the heads one strand at a time for example, and while some people do seem to have them to replace a dead child or a child they can't have, some people just collect them because they think they are beautiful.
