Overnight I have found mole hills all over my lawn! I have tried filling in the holes but the next morning they appear somewhere else, how do I deter these pests?

there are smoke bombs available! Sounds a bit drastic, but the smoke is harmless to the moles. Should be available in garden centres, hardware stores etc
A friend of mine buried musical birthday cards near all the holes and honestly the moles vanished.
I think everyone with a garden has his/her method. I was given this trick which I must admit I scoffed at but it worked:
stuff a handful of (human) hair down the hole. Don't do anything drastic, just go to the local hairdressers and ask them for a bagful of hair cuttings; They will look at you as if you are nuts but when they know why you want it they decide that you are nuts! But as I said I tried it and it worked!

my aunt had this problem... oh dear she tried EVERYTHING and i mean that, after a few years she was so angry and upset at these moles digging up her lovely garden that she did one's head in with a spade.  obviously I dont recommend that but it did deter them and i don't think they come back now!  Of course every birthday and christmas she gets a whole horde of mole related gifts.

We had this problem about 5 or 6 years ago.  We have lived at our house for 17 years and have only ever had moles one year.

We tried everything.  We tried flooding them out with a hose pipe, then we tried a pressure washer.  We even blasted compressed air down the holes.  We tried dog muck, hoping the smell would drive them out.  We put Jeys fluid down the holes, bleach, its a wonder we didn't have a chemical explosion but none of it shifted them.  My husband got more and more frustrated, he could be seen out there with spade in hand waiting for the soil to move, smashing it down when ever the mound got bigger but he never caught them.  All of this must have created a lot of entertainment for our next door neighbours.  One day after a couple of months of all out war on our part our neighbour popped his head over the fence and suggested garlic.  We tried this and they have never been seen since.  Whether it was coincidence or whether they had just about had enough, I don't know but garlic is worth a try.
