I've read all these answers and realise many of you don't know 'the French' so who 'they' are I don't know. I know hundreds of French people and they aren't how you describe them, read your history books before making any more comments, please.

The French Attitude to WWII is complicated.

You have to remember that 100 years ago there were huge waves of Anti-semitism sweeping Europe.

Check out "The Dreyfuss Affair" where the French Military basically framed a Jewish officer and kept him on Devil's Island despite knowing his innocence.

So Hitlers regieme found sympathisers in France - hell it found sympathisers in the UK (in some very high quarters - you know who I mean)

Don't forget the Vichey Regieme was lead by Petin who was a hero of World War I.

So for France WWII was both a World war and a civil war all rolled into one.

Civil wars are always the most vicious and that's why revenge against "colaborators" was so bad and why the French are very screwed up about the way so many Jews were just packed off without a fight.

It's not as simple as you make it sound but I guess it's hard to understand in a country that hasn't had a civil war in 350 years - perhaps the closest for us is the Irish question
