Should the Muslim police officers be allowed to pick what duties he carries out?
I refer to the Muslim police officer who ask to be removed from policing the Israeli Embassy.

The moment the police start deciding what, and what they will do not, will be a dire state for the rule of law in this country. All individuals, whatever their race or religion, should be entitled to equal protection under the law and when somebody joins the police force they should accept this. There will always be times when some situation is not to their liking but we cannot allow anarchy to prevail.
Given what has been going on between Israel and Lebanon/Hezbollah recently, I think this was a sensible move.
If those inside the embassy had noticed a Muslim officer outside then thjey could have atacked him and set off worse riots.
Alternatively, if the Israeli Embassy staff had asked for him to be moved on diplomatic grounds, what would have been the reaction then

Nope, I don't think so - the reports I've read state that he asked to have his duties changed...not demanded.
And another thing...I really like the fact that there are Muslim police officers. Isn't that what we should be aiming for? More Muslims in respected and visible 'traditional' roles?

I also embrace the idea of Muslim PCs...as well as Catholic, Christian, Jewish..I could go on.
The point here is that a PC is a PC. An officer of the law who has to put personal feelings aside in order to perform tasks required, and take on duties which although may go against their beliefs or appear morally wrong, must still be done.
The examples given in previous postings may seem extreme, but are viable. Police Officers have to take on duties they may not like 24/7..as do soldiers. I feel that if he can't cope with his duties then he has chosen the wrong career.

I've been arguing against your point of view Pippa68, but I do<i/> know where you're coming from.
If I were to join the police (and I wouldn't because I'm way too lazy to chase crims), I would have to have a long hard think about whether I could overcome personal views in the execution of my job.
Same with the fire service...imagine if you were a fireman, called to a blaze at the Stock, Aitken and Waterman studios in the 80s. What would you do? Put the fire out, or wait until all the master tapes had been destroyed?
I know it's a decision I would hate to have to make...

Well, well, well yet another lively debate that is what it is all about, but to summarise.
sp1814 - You have let yourself down with your contributions to this debate, you have finnally come clean and exposed that enormous chip that is sitting on your shoulders.
No I am in no way against anyone that is Black or Moslem,or Homosexual. But what I am against is when it is seen that certain groups get preferential treatment over others. But I think Dassie was able to address you more eloquently than maybe I could on these matters.
Incidentally from someone who has lived through al the decades you mentioned, the 1950's were the best, life was so much simpler.
Regarding endering the Police Officer to his community, his community is London, England. And he is not a Muslim Police Officer he is a British Police Officer.
There is far too much of this diversity, and the sooner the mixture of races and religions, and sexual preferences that we have in this country of OUR's, come to realise this and no longer demand to be treated differently, the better we will all get on.

But then perhaps what is now needed, is for the various groups that now makeup our Police Force (Oh dear Iv'e slipped up again sorry POLICE SERVICE) to wear flashes on their shoulders stating what group they share their allegiance to.ie. nationality, religion or sexual leanings, this would then make it much easier when the Duty Officer dishes out the day's work.
Finally SABs I do not dislike all Muslims it is only those with an attitude, those that will not embrace this tolerent country as their own, those that want to turn this country into a Muslim State, and those that treat women in an unacceptable way, in
