With only 9% lead mid term it's looking like Sir Beer is unlikely to be the 4th Labour Leader to win a General election in 123 years so who is the likely successor?

I think starmer is likely to stay leader even if he just wins more seats... but if we imagine kier starmer suddenly left or died...

i like angela rayner but i doubt she would win... maybe jess phillips?

if the next labour leadership contest takes place after may 2024 then I think andy burnham would win it easily
// Sir Beer Korma //

If ever a very poor and inaccurate joke had long run its course, it is that one.
Unlike Boris Jonson who was fined for breaking lockdown rules, Starmer wasn’t prosecuted, so the accusation is entirely false.
Only an idiot would think that Starmer will NOT lead Labour into the next General Election.
Between now and the election we will learn the conclusion of the Parliamentary Priviledges Committee investigation into Johnson, and that could be a difficult one for the disgraced ex Prime Minister.

Andy Burnham is not an MP, so cannot be the Labour Party leader.

gromit: "Only an idiot would think that Starmer will NOT lead Labour into the next General Election. " - I agree he definitely will lead Labour into the next election. I'm talking about after when he has lost it. KS needs a world record swing and 9% mid term just ain't enough me old china.
If he loses, he will not necessarily be replaced.
Everyone know a 70+ majority is almost impossible to overturn.
Starmer will not be replaced if:
- he wins back very many of those red wall seats
- there is a hung parliament
- if the Tories have no, or a tiny majority.

In any of those scenarios the progress will be deemed to be good enough and a good/better basis to mount a a credible Opposition.
Wes Streeting. Our first openly gay prime minister.

(I have problem with that, except that he's Labour)
TTT, don't forget Labour are going to take loads of seats in Scotland.

They'll need to hoppy to have any chance.
I reckon most of the red wall (which was most of Johnson’s majority) will revert back. A lots of very tiny majorities in those, and Brexit is done.
Come the next election I think voters who don’t like the Tories will have a bit of a dilemma. They have two alternatives - and neither leader can tell a male from a female. It doesn’t bode well for the big decisions.
Changes at the top unsettle voters, so it only happens if there is absolutely no alternative.

Losing an election usually, but not always, brings a change, and the change will be decided at the time, depending on circumstances.

gromit: "Everyone know a 70+ majority is almost impossible to overturn." - your buddy Gulliver doesn't!
As naomi points out, the dithering by both leaders trying to decide which does them the least damage - supporting the Woke Brigade, or the Rational Majority.

One is silent, but the other is seriously noisy, and can reach out to the social media generation.
But as Mr Corbyn discovered after he ping-ponged over the Brexit result, the electorate prefer you to take a position, even if you are wrong, rather than wait a fatally long time to see which way the political wind is blowing.
Neither is silent in the subject of women with penises. The LibDem man (can’t remember his name) spoke up on the subject just recently and agreed with Keir. Yes, some women do have penises.
When I said one is silent and the other us noisy, I was referring to the Woke Brigade and the Silent Majority, not the party leaders.
Earlier I meant I have no problem
Any politician who supports net zero, thinks some women can have a penis and we shouldn't be driving petrol or diesel cars after 2030 (try campaigning with those policies in the red wall seats) should face electoral oblivion.
“I like Angela Rayner….”

Can I have some of the glue you are very clearly sniffing?

Are you seriously suggesting Rayner is a viable leader of one of the world’s largest economies? Seriously?

I know we have political pygmies now, but Jesus wept, if you think Rayner is a viable leader I genuinely worry about you.
I think she is shrewd and does not suffer fools… she is very hard working and has grit… i think she wants to make the country a better place and i agree with many of her policy positions at least the ones i am familiar with.

i don’t like cults of personality or admiring any politician too much but yes i like her and would be pleased if she became leader. doubt it will happen though.
Opinions differ, but I think she’s, at best, a functional PA to the Sales Manager of a provincial plumbing supplies company.

Do you honestly, really, believe she can lead a country? Really?
