I am an atheist and have negative feelings about most religions and religious leaders.

The Dalai Lama seemed to be different - good sense of humour and spoke sense and was a good speechmaker.

Does seem strange. One notices the apology has no mention of tongues. Only the DL can know what he was thinking of at the time, but quite the faux pas whatever it was. Perhaps age is spoiling his judgement.
