“It is impossible to say how long it will take but when we have found a care home willing to receive your mum, the police will give us a travel date and we will have to issue an emergency passport,” an official at the embassy told the Pooles."
Perhaps if the family had contacted the Embassy earlier, the problems could have been avoided but I'm wondering if the Embassy could have sped up the process for a renewal passport.

No, it has nothing to do with Brexit and everything to do with decisions made by the Swedish government and it's establishment
using Brexit as an excuse for their actions. Someone is probably only acting under orders, that must be obeyed without question.
A member of the UK government should contact the Swedish government to point out the injustice, and how Sweden's action looks to the rest of the world. Surely a little diplomacy can settle it.

Yes I have. As it happens, I fully support Sweden’s ability to decide who stays within its borders and who does not. That’s what normal countries do. Alas there are 400-odd million people over whom they cannot exercise that right. But it’s a pity they did not exercise it more diligently when it allowed tens of thousands of young single foreign men to enter and remain there, leading to widespread problems in some of their larger cities.
However, that is not the point I am making. All countries exercising such rights need also to exercise compassion and to choose a 74 year old lady suffering from Alzheimer’s does not paint them in a good light and I would criticise the UK authorities if they did something similar. Of course it is an ideal example chosen by those unhappy at the UK’s departure from the EU to demonstrate their argument. That’s why it’s crass.

I’m a Brexiteer but you shouldn’t include me in that statement because I promised nothing of the sort. For one thing I was not in a position to promise anything and nor was anybody else (including politicians). As I have said many times, anybody who cast their vote in the referendum based on what politicians had told (or promised) them was foolish. For my part, as I have also said many times, Brexit has been a resounding success for one single reason - the UK is no longer a member of the pernicious, protectionist organisation that is the European Union. Anything else is just noise which will abate in time. But you already know all of this – you just need reminding now and then.
