Germany has be notoriously slow at adopting renewable energy, and this is the result. All nations need a diverse source of energy from different providers. That way a country is not vulnerable if one source, such as imported gas from Russia, dries up.
Under Brown and Cameron, the UK incentivised wind and solar, and pushed for better energy efficiency. It was a good policy and is paying dividends now. Germany did nothing and are now suffering.
The fact that Germany is going back on its climate and pollution pledges is down to necessity. They are paying for their mistakes in the past.
And there are those in the UK who completely do not understand this. They want to reopen the coal power stations, build more. If Sunak has any sense, he should build more wind farms on the mainland (currently banned) and expand home solar (only 1 in 50 homes has it).

the long and short of it is that it is well known that the German utility companies, particularly for gas acquisition and transmission, are notoriously corrupt and have paid all sorts of backhanders - and to prevent their renewables industry, or rather we others who have the technology from developing the sector. Nice to see that they are now being taunted/teased and forced to take action over this.

This afternoon we are getting 52% of our electricity from wind power (and 12% from solar). If we didn’t have that generating capacity, and had to rely on imported gas and coal from dodgy regimes, and we would be in a mess.

I credited Cameron for our current position of being quite energy secure due to his Governments investment in alternate power and efficiency.
Sadly despite it being very successful, recent Conservative Governments have ended incentives for wind and solar. Hopefully the new PM will reverse that. A good start by rebanning fracking - well done Sunak.
