Not sure... but if the flames spread to the pipe wouldn't it be worser
Question Author
think it will only burn on surface ? I've seen one burning on tv in the Mexican gulf before
When you burn methane you produce carbon dioxide, which also increases the greenhouse effect.

but checking this out i found on the web
"Methane has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide "
can't the turn off the gas flow?
The Russian's have the tap. More images of bubbling gas upset the market and drive up the price, which is what they want
Supposedly it's gas remaining in the pipe after flow was turned off
^^^^ if so then it will just dissipate over time.

just found this ..
"Nord Stream 2 had been completed in 2021 but has never been used. So how is there any gas in it to leak out? Because the operators of the line had filled it with 117 million cubic meters of gas in order to commission and test the line. As pressures rapidly decline the dramatic half-mile-wide Baltic Sea bubble show will fade."

Yes NS 2 was never operational but it was about to be.
It never will now.
Gazprom is currently is dispute with Naftogaz (Ukraine) surprise surprise and there is the chance the gas that comes via Ukraine might be switched off too. Of course Russia pays Naftogaz transit fees which would offset the loss of revenue.
Ultimately though higher gas prices will fail to compensate Russia for loss of customers
This from the Guardian describes the huge amount of gas in the pipeline, and the potential environmental damage
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/sep/28/nord-stream-methane-gas-leaks-may-be-biggest-ever-with-warning-large-climate-risk
...well that's just undone all our efforts!
// higher gas prices will fail to compensate Russia for loss of customers //

do they even need Europe? can they not sell every cubic metre they've got to the Chines and the Indians?
Methane leaks from the ground naturally all the time. In far greater quantities than is escaping from Nordstream.
40% of methane in the atmosphere, escapes from bogs and marshes and cows bottoms.
You may remember this from 6 months ago.

....yes gromit + all the land fill sites.
It does but this is a whole lot extra.

Mind you it won't do so indefinitely in this case.
Germany doubts that the pipelines will ever work again.
Splendid!
