Bizarre that Grant Shaps stands for the leadership and then withdraws within 24 hours. Also odd that Priti Patel (who has a very high opinion of herself) doesn't stand.

I agree. The best Labour can hope for is forming a coalition another Johnson type scandal. Starmer must up his game dramatically over the next 3 months.

Naomi: OK, but still think Labour is terminal. They can't more to the Left (like a Corbyn disaster) and they can't move to the right (Blairish). So where's their way ahead?
I don’t think Labour is necessarily getting ahead or have a feasible way ahead, paigntonian. Any progress they make now will be by default, the Conservatives having shot themselves firmly in both feet.
It’s not odd at all IMO. Grant Shapps declared ages ago. And Priti Patel did the sensible thing - for once.
All sorts of deals and chicanery go on in these things - one reason maybe Sajid Javid - maybe the most decent of the lot - has pulled out.

William: Remind me when Labour last won a general election and what massive hurdle they face at the next election...

Ich: It IS odd. Yesterday he launched his campaign. Today he pulls out. If he didn't think he'd get 20 nominations why stand? If he thought he'd get 20, and failed to do so, he must be stupid.
william: "Mark my words, Labour will win the next General Election." - duly marked.
I don’t consider Javid decent. I’m in no doubt whatsoever that he and Sunak planned their resignations to coincide, hence making the greatest impact.
Grant Shapps has been on the list of declared candidates for ages. He was one of the first to say he’d have a go.
And plainly wasn’t getting anywhere so sensibly withdrew:
The oddity was Rehmaj
Rehman “who the hell is he” Chishti.
Joined the race last night.
Discovered no one knew who the hell he was today :-)
> The biggest problem the Tories must overcome is voter apathy

Yep, look what happened to Remain ...
People who know Sajid will tell you he’s a very down to earth honest guy.
As for BJ: what is it they say?
There are people who like him and also people who know him :-)
Javid's not running.
william, Real Labour have been in existence for 122 years, they have been in power just under 24 of those. They last won an election in 1974. Only 3 labour leaders have ever won and Election. Labour in its current form cannot ever win again.
Ich, I know several people who know Boris and they don’t say what you say. :o)

I don’t think anyone suggested that Javid was running, Jno.
No doubt Naomi but he’s been sacked from every job or most he ever had for lying so while I cannot personally comment on his likeability (his sister I do know and like very much) I think the honesty thing is open to question.
I still praise him for Ukraine and a lot of the Covid stuff
he was in the running but he's pulled out, naomi.

'Grant Shapps has been on the list of declared candidates for ages'. There's no such thing.
Yes there is!
I mean, but tablets or stone but at any given time there’s been a virtual list of people who have said “I’m going to stand”
Anyway, it’s not that important :-)
Hmmm… I question the ‘lies’ but I remember you lying to me, ich, and it wasn’t even a debatable lie. Perhaps the less said the better about lies.
“but I remember you lying to me, ich, and”

Perhaps you should clarify
