Nasty Nicola held a briefing today, which I am sure she lover every second of threatening all sorts of potential changes in the coming days, tighter restrictions on social gatherings, a cobra meeting this afternoon where she is going to ask for more cash if businesses are going to shut down etc. One thing she said that came out of her loud mouth "We don't know how seriously unwell or mildly unwell people are going to be with the Omicron variant " clearly she doesn't have the facts. So why is she predicting dire events and potentially ruining peoples events. ?

Kill-joy Calvinist Nicola may come in a spray your party with fire extinguisher
but that is her decision ( and gods ) and NOT a medical decision
gordie, hang on in there. Your parents are in their 80's, I guess. If further lockdown rules apply it will help to protect them and you. Your celebratory arrangements can be held at a later date for it is more important that you all preserve your health.

The simple reason for the FM to make the announcements is that the experts do not yet know how virulent and dangerous this new variant is. I saw a video on the BBC news yesterday where Dr Catherine Smallwood from WHO said it would be another week or so before more results would be available. I have looked for the video but cannot find it for now, sorry.
Gordie and MrsCheese please read Bobbins factual and sensible thread carefully and do some research. The vaccines are saving lots of serious illness and deaths. Dont have them if you don't want them. But bear in mind you can catch it from vaccinated people with few or no symptoms and you could suffer.
MrsCheese.

////the sensible answer would be to let this mild strain run the course and t will give everyone a natural immunity and end this cycle////

Quite correct....if it IS a mild disease and only time will tell,we should know when results are analysed around 3 weeks time. BUT MrsCheese, suppose you are wrong, hospital admissions start to climb, deaths increase and no sign of brakes being put on transmission?
Bit of a gamble eh!

////MrsCheeseThe vaccine appears to have been no help at all//
Wrong as explained by PP.
Found it
Putting a search in the BBC site that includes Dr + WHO produces a load of old Daleks ;)

"BUT MrsCheese, suppose you are wrong, hospital admissions start to climb, deaths increase and no sign of brakes being put on transmission?"

Just use the purpose-built facilities we bought and paid for early on, unless they've been dismantled having been unused over the piece.

Surely one or two of the high-powered pullers of strings has an effective plan in a drawer somewhere just waiting for the right moment, now in the past.

Sqad is right so I dont suppose anyone will listen
this is after all AB
Have your party what does it matter to you if others fall ill
Question Author
Sarcasm Red Helen how are others going to fall ill everyone invited is triple vaccinated the staff at the venue are triple vaccinated how the hell can anyone get it? If we go into another lockdown I will make an informed choice about euthenasia
Question Author
RedHelen72 I find your comment completely stupid misguided and insulting
Gordie, Triple vaccinated people can - and do - get Covid. Triple vaccinated people can - and do - infect others. The vaccine reduces things - transmissions, level of disease etc - it doesn't eliminate them completely.
gordie, you are missing the most important point. Vaccination does not prevent any of us from catching/carrying Covid. The point is we should not be so ill if we are fully vaccinated.
Hmmm. The person who says "If we go into another lockdown I will make an informed choice about euthenasia" fi ds someone else's comment "completely stupid misguided and insulting".

Slightly ironic methinks.
gordie, no offence but may I ask you what your worst case scenario is?

I want my 50th party I have depression its the only thing i have to look forward to I have had a lifetime of disappointments with jobs I should have had I have a long list, people that have let me down in churches another long list, the final one being 3 years ago I think about every day. I can be quite self absorbed but I would rather my parents party went ahead next weekend than mine maybe I should do a deal with God?
Question Author
I think my worst case scenario is all pubs locked down in Scotland and not being able to do anything on my 50th Birthday or the party being cancelled. I could just sink into a depression
I cannot answer that, gordie. But, for what it is worth, I truly hope your parents' party goes ahead. Your birthday is in January so a lot could change before then. I am sorry for your situation, take care.
gordie, I would suggest you use the word "postponed" and not "cancelled". You would still have something to look forward to.
Sorry, but if a grown man can’t cope without a birthday party he has a problem. Nicola might be a control freak but she’s not out to get you. In an effort to limit the spread of the virus and to relieve pressure on the NHS we’re all experiencing tighter restrictions. That’s life at the moment and we just have to get on with it.

I’ve read some tripe about the vaccine but some of the posts here take some beating. The fact is vaccines aren’t guaranteed to stop you contracting the virus but in the event that you do, you are far less likely to suffer serious illness or worse.
Gordie, please understand that Neveracrossword and others are right. I am 74, tripple vaccinated but aware that I can still catch Covid and not even know I have it and can be passing it to others. The risk is less because of the vaccinations and I feel that I have less chance of severe illness or death. I would not dream of having a party or going to a party. Surely your guests would fully understand if you postponed it. Perhaps they will be also grateful and relieved. Lots of us suffer from depression, myself included. Catching Covid would make me more depressed.
