My debit card says on the front Expires End 11/21 but every time I've tried to use it online today it says it wasn't authorised and that I should contact my bank.
The bank have sent me a new card which is valid from 10/21, but I haven't registered it with chip and pin yet.
Any idea why I can't use my old card until the end of this month ? TIA

Why can’t you just use the new card?
I would just start using the new card - the fact it's been issued probably means it supersedes the previous one.

Can't use the new card until I first use it as a chip and pin which means going out in the pouring rain to buy something in a shop or draw money out of the hole in the wall.
I don't think thats correct Barsel, you cannot use it as contactless until its had a chip and pin on it - but its valid from now
Have you used the new one for any on line purchase. If so you cannot use the old one again

No, I've been putting the old number in as I thought it was still valid. Will try putting the new number in and see what happens.
I think Red Helen is right. The first time you use it in a shop you can't use it contactless - you have to put it into the reader and physically enter your pin to activate that - but your card will be valid to use online, for example.
Have you still got the paperwork the bank sent with the card, it should give you 2 further options to validate the new card. Usually an automated telephone number or logging on to your account and doing it online.

///We couldn't process your request.///
Still not working.
ubasses Yes it says you can set it up in your digital wallet i.e ApplePay etc but I don't have any of that.

I've tried new and old cards on several websites I use regularly and it isn't having it.
Better get my wellies on.
I just got a new card and goodgoalie is correct, I had to go to the store and use chip and pin before i could use contactless or order online, it had to be physically activated at an atm or in supermarket and because it has been issued, the other card is now invalid.

Thanks ducksie. It's a different card too although I didn't ask for it.
It was a Visa card but now it's a Mastercard.
Will go and draw some money out while the rain has eased off.
ubasses is of course correct
all to do with fraud....
and....

having evicted a tenant ( the one whose father put up with her for a week and commented: "I am a protestant minister not a Roman Catholic saint!" )
I found empty letters - whose cards had been detached in neighbours names ....
yup,
*Name* or was that *name* or *name* or....
was NOT above collecting other peoples cards
I wrote to *name* fathers parish chief constable and said she is yours now! - and told the neighbours as well.

I still hear of *name* from a neighbour who foolishly is still frenz with her .....
Are you NATWEST by any chance Barsel?
setting it up in your digital wallet isnt what ubases is talking about though - she's talking about validating it with your bank

All is well. Went to the ATM drew out some money, came home and it's working fine.
Tesco online took a little bit longer as they need a OTP from my bank which they sent and now everything is working fine.
Thanks for all your answers, but it seems in this case, I needed to validate the new card before I could use it to buy online as well as using it as a contactless card.
Fortunately the rain held off. :-)
Barsel I got a new card last week to be expired before end of October but I started to use it right away with still the old pin and worked like a dream. Just cut up the old card. Just use the new card and I don't think you need a new pin - just old pin.
Sister has joined Ulster bank here - they made her leave Post Office. Anyway I have to read her parapheranalia (sp) and they have told her she will get another new card in December because the Visa will be changed to Mastercard
All Natwest/Ulsterbank cards are changing to Mastercard before the end of the year - even new ones that have just been issued
Do you know why?
