naomi, it's entirely clear that Kwateng and Sunak are having a public disagreement. This in itself is evidence that neither Boris nor Raab are doing their job of keeing it quiet.

This sort of shambles doesn't occur under strong PMs like Thatcher or Blair - Willie Whitelaw or Alistair Campbell would have stamped on it the second it became an issue. Weak PMs like Major and Boris can't handle it.

You may assume the PM is enjoying a 'freebie', but you don't actually know it for a fact do you?

It may be the PM is paying market rate rent in order to head off such criticism as that you are offering, albeit with no evidence beyond your assumption, which doesn't really count.

As for comparing Blair and Thatcher - well, both won three elections. But only one left voluntarily.

The mind-set that if Boris goes on holiday, everything grinds to a halt unless he has a 'deputy' in place is nonsense.

Government runs as a series of departments, each one fully staffed and independent, and they don;t all need Boris's sign-off for every mortal thing they do every minute of the day.

He will be in constant touch for anything that actually needs his input, so his holiday will not be as free and easy, and maybe nor even free - as his detractors want to assume.
