Am I missing something here? The boy was riding a private (ebay purchase) e-scooter illegally on the road. Would he not have similarly ignored any legislation that required him to wear a helmet?

i sort of thought the same. Yesterday the girlfriend was on the news talking about how his sacrifice could save other people and i thought what a strange way to put it - he didnt make any sacrifices (unless they are talking of his death, in which case sacrifice is a very strange way of terming it).
It's very sad of course, and awful for both his family and the person they were in a crash with
Can't see the logic of this sentence in the report:
""He'd been in an accident before in Jamaica," Bryana said, "So I thought it was going to be OK.""

Very sad waste of a life, dreadful for his loved ones
Sacrifice? More a tragic waste of a young life.
The bereaved family is trying to get something positive from his death by spreading the message to wear a helmet. Have a heart ...
I suppose that were helmets mandatory on e-scooters, anyone not wearing one could be pulled over immediately and then checked to see if they hold the necessary category Q entitlement on their licence. As it stands at the moment, how are the police to know which e-scooter riders are taking part in the government backed trial?

Similarly if all scooter riders wore helmets they still wouldn't know legals from illegals. Needs some sort of registration plate?
Ken, the e-scooters that can be legally ridden are very distinctive - they are rented and easily recognised by the authorities
Ban them altogether, unstable deathtraps, should be instant seize and destroy none of this hire carry on. We saw a girl hit by one of these on the pavement, her mother went ballistic attacking the rider, good on her.
Right, Barry, i didn't know. Ta for that.
Yep, only rented e-scooters are legal in public. Bought ones are only for use on private land (at present).
It is a sad case which we will see more of if they become more popular.
"The bereaved family is trying to get something positive from his death by spreading the message to wear a helmet. Have a heart ..."
but the message is ridiculous - when doing something illegal, make sure you do it safely
While I feel sorry for the family there have been many reports of riders of non rented scooters being killed or injured by younger riders as well. Maybe all non compliant e scooters on public roads should be taken by the police
> when doing something illegal, make sure you do it safely

You could choose to interpret it that way, but even then it's not ridiculous: it's like wearing a seatbelt while speeding, or wearing a cycle helmet while riding on the pavement.

But their message is to wear a helmet while on an e-scooter. And I have never seen anybody doing that on a legally rented one.
I think helmet please etc are pointless if one is prepared to ride these things on the pavement why would they wear a lid?
what I don;t get though is that we are always being told that the saucepans are all getting fatter so the last thing they should be using is a lecky powered scooter!
10:02: Helmet Pleas
Failure of Government.
They make e-scooters illegal to use on public roads, but do not enforce it. So lots of people do it. It is illegal to sell a car in a dangerous condition, but our favourite tech tax dodger is awash with them for sale.

I don't think that is what you mean...
