I only became aware of this today, that the government has voter ID plans whereby in order to vote at polling stations, voters will be required to show official photo ID (such as a passport, driver’s licence etc).

Many people do not hold such ID and will therefore be disenfranchised as a result of this legislation which is likely to impact the poorer sections of our society. Quite why the Labour Party is not up in arms against such plans I don’t know.

I recall at the height of the Trump claims that postal voter fraud cost him the election – some Russian election official announced (with a straight face), that they did not permit postal voting in their elections as it was open to voter fraud.
I agree, postal voting is bent as a 9 bob.
The amount of postal voter fraud is grossly over exaggerated.
Going back to the voter photo id tho, the next thing they’ll be suggesting everyone has to put their name in a list first.
Oh hang on ...
I think UK democracy is under a far greater threat from voter fraud than it is from asking people to identify themselves when they go to vote. Of course what this will not address, as far as I can see, is postal voting irregularities. This was identified as one of the causes of fraud in the "Lutfur Rahman" affair in Tower Hamlets in 2014. Postal vote forms were "harvested" by Mayor Rahman's people and completed fraudulently by them. I'm not sure any new arrangements will counter that problem which stems from allowing postal votes on demand rather than requiring a valid reason for requesting one.

I really cannot see any problem in requiring ID to vote. The very few people who have no photo idea can obtain a document from the Local Authority.
postal voting should be banned, if you can't be arised to go and vote you don't deserve a vote, end of.
“ that they did not permit postal voting in their elections as it was open to voter fraud.”

In fact the reason they might not allow it is because it’s a very inefficient way of organising mass fraud.
What they do in Russia is have “voting parties” where people do their voting in person but under the supervision of officials.
Or stuff ballot boxes after the observers have gone home.
Or simply make it up .
And in places like Russia postal voting might be one of the safer and less fraudulent ways of casting your vote
I fail to see why the government cannot set up a body to issue multi-purpose photo ID cards, at a cost. They need not be compulsory but I am sure that many people would benefit from one. Those who refuse to have one will have to take the consequences.

I love the fact that those ABers who hate the EUSSR will cite things that the EUSSR do, to support things they want the UK to do (as in this example of voter ID requirements within a number of EU countries).
//I love the fact that those ABers who hate the EUSSR will cite things that the EUSSR do,//

No you don't. You hate the Brexiteers using the bloc as an example to disprove your falsehoods. You are against voter ID in the UK
Ich, stuff ballot boxes ?

Having been a sorter/counter, each ballot is numbered from the polling stn. Boxes are security sealed & delivered to counting stn.
I cant see how fraud could penetrate
Hmm that posted on its own.

...You are against voter ID in the UK(apparently) but were unaware that it was already used in the EUSSR. Ever ready to criticise the UK and unwilling to see the many wrongs in the EUSSR. Not been a good few weeks for you then has it? You are part of the problem not part of a solution.
TTT what about those unable to get to voting station due to disability?
tonyv, disabled can be ferried by their party rep
Then carried in on someone's shoulder?
That used to be very common at one time. Parties would have fleets of cars ready to take people to the polling station.
I don’t believe I am reading this :-(
I was responding to TTT's post @ 21.59
Oh, you are - we've had it all before.
