Poland - Pro-EU leader Donald Tusk returns to power
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-67657838

The daily livestream from Poland's parliament, the Sejm, has become an online hit, drawing hundreds of thousands of viewers for each session. Some top a million.

Soon the latest must-watch series will make the leap to the big screen. Demand to follow key proceedings next week is so high that one of Warsaw's main cinemas, Kinoteka, is showing the whole thing, offering politics with popcorn.

The surge of public enthusiasm for tracking the ins-and-outs of political life follows an election in mid-October that saw a record turnout of over 70%.

Democracy is in vogue here, with women and young people particularly engaged.

Many were motivated to vote by stark warnings from the opposition that Poland was backsliding on some of the basic principles of democracy, under a right-wing PiS (Law and Justice Party) government.

Unlike 'no hope' Britain, Poland is back on track..

Democracy takes back control, populism has failed.

Just need to get those truckers moving. Hungarian ones at it again now too.

"The threat of the return of FASCISM has faded...?"

So what's your definition of Fascism, then? Is it a political stance that you just don't agree wth? Or is it something else that we can all understand?

Fascism and authoritarianism are similar.

And how does that relate to the governance of Poland?

Fascism is a moveable feast. The actual definition is a far right authoritarian regime, which flies in the face of the likes of N Korea who are not far right but are a facisct regime.

It's such a movable feast that I'd describe the Just Stop Oil clowns as fascists because of their regime that their way is the ONLY way.

It's become a meaningless term, often used by those on the left to stifle debate.

I've lost count of the number of times recently I've heard the pro-Palestine/Hamas mob refer to Israel as a fascist state, when Israel are anything but.

Indeed, dd. I often think that accusations of Fascism are bounded about whenever laws are introduced which some sections of the population simply are not too keen on.

I struggle with the idea it's a right wing philosophy given that the only fascist states in the world are what would be described as far left.

"Democracy takes back control, populism has failed."

Since they are both the same thing, the former term merely used by supporters and the latter by opponents, you need to make up your mind. Has it failed or is it back in control ?

"The threat of the return of FASCISM has faded...?" - Really? Just try having the "wrong" opinion on any given subject or using the wrong pronoun. The may not be gassing us en masse, yet, but punishments are certainly being dished out for not conforming.

The Polish border blockade of Ukraine lifted as of this morning

Russia is, and has always been an authoritarian state, it went from Tsarism, to fake communism to fake democracy.

It is now effectively a fascist dictatorship and looks like remaining so beyond the forthcoming 'election'.

Fascist.. au contraire, don't tell me you don't know the fact it's a popular term used to describe the opposite of 'nice/socialist'. Before the endless replies claiming socialism is communism, or conflating one with another for the purposes of right wing 'attack' diversion tactics from admitting acknowledgement of the clear meaning inferred.. let us say 'social democratic' socialism.. 'nice caring party' as opposed to 'nasty party'.

Anyhoo here's something to watch, get your popcorn out!
