Clearly none of the 27 members were consulted when the commission decided unilaterally to make a complete fool of itself and them by association. Does the bloc need urgent reform? Is the commission too powerful?

Yes - and the level of f****** arrogance they have. The bloc needs to be disbanded and reformed as a defence/trading alliance only. The idea of a 'superstate' should be put to bed once and for all.

Can the word 'dictatorship' be used here?
The EU shot itself in the foot.
It quickly realised that, and did a U-turn.

But you have a point, the EU President and Commissioners acted recklessly and without consulting its members. And brought the organisation into disrepute.

But they are stuck with them, only a change of constitution can change how the EU works and that is not going to happen.

Fortunately the UK has an elected leader and everyone put their cross next to Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson in the Prime Ministerial Elections.
Actually we don't have an elected leader in the sense that the country elect the leader. The country vote for their local reprsentative and the party who has the most local representative winners forms the government. Their leader is elected by the party members, not by the general public.

What this shows is that despite having a big debating chamber full of elected representatives, there's a junta of unelected people at the top of it calling the shots - or at least trying to.

It might be alright if it would recognise that it needs reform.
Not disagreeing with you woofgang but I do wonder how many people look at the potential Prime Members of the main parties and vote accordingly for the party they represent.
As one or two have subtly and not so subtly pointed out, awful decisions are not the prerogative of individual cabinets/cabals call them what you will on the far side of the channel.

There are times when "consultation" makes sense and times when it doesn't. The consultation should have been with the UK, not the member states.
It is clear that the commission has acted foolishly - more so for the absence of consultation, which will not sit well with the member states.

Now that we are not governed by the commission any more, it is easy for England to sit back and smile at their stupidity, and it adds another tick on the list for good reasons to have left the EU.
what's with this "E U S SR" crap'

It's a made-up acronym used by some posters who liken the EU to the USSR in terms of its approach.

It's a made-up acronym used by some posters who liken the EU to the USSR in terms of its approach. \\ - and I think this latest episode by the EUSSR adds to their worthiness of the name.

How about EUtopia? Much better methinks :O)

Noun. Eutopia (plural Eutopias) A place of ideal well-being, as a practical aspiration (compared with utopia as an impossible concept).
If anything the swift backtracking makes the EUSSR nonsense even less appropriate.
Hands up the government that’s never made a mismove ...
Yes ---- and I hope it will convince my remainer daughter that she is quite wrong about electoral accountability (she keeps saying that the EU has an elected Parliament and can't see the difference when I explain it to her). She's pretty bright otherwise. Puzzle.
What do you think the difference is, as a matter of interest?
Hello, the Brains Trust lives, I see.
Gawd, Yet another rubbish post from John Bull.
Another inflammatory and aggressive first post from TTT.
