watching this on the news this morning, it didn't take them long did it. Can't understand that some people get released after half their sentence at all.
Question Author
Me either , why when someone is given 3 years like the latest terrorist ,they are on automatic release after 18 months????
he was being followed by the police, thank heavens for that, otherwise this could have been so much worse.
Question Author
Yes, by 20 police to one Jihadi , imagine the cost of that to the tax payer?
I don't see it that way, Bobbisox. My interpretation of your link is that learned people in the legal profession are warning the Government to make sure that all changes are within the law. And that's just what our Government must do before rushing into introducing new legislation that can be challenged time and time again in the courts.
I have to admit that I kind of agreed with the lawyer on the radio this morning. After 3 years for example they still have to be released. It's not like the extra 18 months would have done anything except radicalise him more. Having said that 3 year should mean 3 years for everyone
Does anyone understand why anyone is released early ? I mean, aside from prison crowding and otherwise needing to fund new gaols. Even then judges could be encouraged to give half the sentence in the first place.

Ken, there was a lawyer on this mornings news who was adamant any change , he’d mount a legal challenge to it, I understand there has to be with the backing of our legal system who, in my opinion ,should back any changes to keep people safe
^
That's what would probably happen, OG. However, if someone on licence reoffends they can be sent straight back to prison to serve the remainder of their sentence.
It's an incentive to behave. Misbehave and they are back in the slammer a bit sharpish! They then finish their original sentence.

Boaty when it comes to 20 policemen to survey one person, there’s something very wrong with letting this vermin free
at least he is one dead vermin, who doesn't now need following.
It's good to be careful, but I don't see expectation as a basis for denying disappointment. If sentenced to x years then x years should be the expectation, less a bonus. Dissatisfaction in prisons regarding the change simply has to be managed. It's not like one is retrospectively increasing the sentence. Just ensuring it's complied with.

And new legislation should override old.

"The decision to lengthen the sentences of people who've already been sentenced and therefore expected to be serving half the sentence may be in breach of the law....: said such a reform "should be the subject of careful consideration to ensure that it complies with the rule of law"...: that under the government's plans, terror offenders will only be considered for release once they have served two-thirds of their sentence and with the approval of the Parole Board."

blah, blah, IF it suits us, hypocrisy blah

To be honest the league system of sentencing has needed an overhaul for a long time.

Liberalisation of the judiciary and fewer and more expensive prison spaces has contributed to it.

Be good and you get out early, shorter or no sentences for ‘low level entry level’ crimes, low value crimes not even investigated, life doesn’t mean life it just means your life sentence tags along not that you will be in prison for life.

It’s all a contribution but TBH we simply don’t have the resources to bang up for an appropriate time or to truly rehabilitate.

And if you add to all that the fact people now expect more for themselves regardless of merit and you have a *** storm.

Terrorism to the liberal hand wringers is no different to the shop lifter. Well that’s how it seems sometimes.
The longer you keep them in, the more radical they become, (though as long as they are locked up we know where they are & they aren't stabbing innocent people in the street!) It's looking at the problem from the wrong end, sanctions must be taken against the Muslim community from where I haven't heard a single outcry at these atrocities, it's as if they & their mullahs live in an entirely parallel society, which in a sense they do, & this must be addressed.
Question Author
Not one Imam has came out to condemn this latest attack....have they ?
The government is fighting Islamic terrorism with one hand tied behind its back. This is an ideology that isn’t going to go away - and it doesn’t result from mental illness. These people should be imprisoned for life. No ifs, no buts.
Question Author
Single cells ( enough room for a bed, washbasin) no access to tv or even controlled internet , solitary confinement
Harsh? Tell that to the people they maim and kill
I would go further, bobbi. No imams in prisons and no halal food. No recognition whatsoever of their religion.
