where you have uncontrolled gun use then you will have nut jobs doing their best to kill as many as possible.
Sadly, amongst many Americans, the right to have a gun far outweighs the life of a child.
I don't know why anyone is surprised. It's going to keep happening over and over again.

What happens if the family of any of the victims don't have medical insurance?
ummmm they will still get treated for their wounds.
...and then get a bill.
Who pays? Are they lumbered with a debt they could spend a lifetime paying off? Being shot at school often it isn't just the physical injuries that need healing.
Seems funny whenever something like this happens in America there is an outcry and demands of stricter gun laws, yet our own young are being slaughtered on almost a daily basis not with guns but knives and we seem to accept this for fear of being labeled racist.
sorry it's not about racism and we don't accept it.
The police do what they can, there are groups that help young people get away from gang culture, but it must be a hard task to do. They recruit by force youngsters 13, 14 years of age and enrol them in gangs if they don't the parents are targeted or their friends. This is about drugs and that is a whole different ball game
The knives vs guns argument can be answered with one simple fact. Knives have a practical use, guns are pointless in an advanced society.
Knives are also readily available anywhere...are cheap...and do not need a licence.
In the US, the right ( so called ) to bear arms is written indelibly in the nation's psyche, it's part of the culture. A "right" we cannot comprehend.
As I ask every time but get no proper answer, how does anyone propose they deal with it given the estimated 400 million guns floating round the US?

Easy to criticise, far harder to come up with a practical solution.
It's tragic yet again, I can't see a solurion which is horrific in itself.

AOG, I'm sorry you know people who accept knife crime, I don't.
Knife crime, brawlers, one punch killers...cannot be compared to gun crime.

It would appear that many of these gun crimes in schools are planned well in advance. They aren't carrying the gun for protection, the plan on using it to kill innocent people.

Implementing some stricter system of background checking so that any old nut job can't just walk into a Walmart and come out with a submachine gun would be a start.

However, I agree with you that genie is out of the bottle as regards America and guns. I'm more concerned with what happens here, and how we sort out our own problems with violent crime.

There's no quick fix. First I'd suggest the outright banning on automatic/semi-auto guns, designed solely for warfare. Then to make licences more difficult to get, with more thorough checks on mental health and psychological issues of licence holders. Finally, make them more difficult to get hold of, rather than have a gunshop on every corner, or a gun aisle at the local Walmart.

People smarter than I can deal with the details (I'm asking for abuse saying that, I'm sure)
And there is a problem with forced gun control in the US. As a right to bare arms is written into the constitution there will be huge push back on forced buyback or confiscation by law abiding citizens. A lot don’t even like restrictions and background checks but it will undoubtedly get harder to buy, keep and transport guns.

But in a country like America it will be seen as the first step into dictatorship. Gun ownership was first and foremost to be able to rise up against an oppressive government.

And of course the criminally inclined will not obey the law and will get guns regardless.

The vast majority of these mass shootings (different criteria depending on who you speak to) are by definition committed by a criminal. Probably one with a mental illness of some sort. Especially the kids that do it. What triggers them to do something like that?

Ludwig completely stole my thunder while I was mid post lol

yeh mozz - you are grooming yourself for abuse to use the modern idiom. - I can hear a V E Bott thcreaming in the corridor, getting ready for you ! - ooer Mrs!

some points do arise - who pays for the many uninsured?
in Nevada, 2017 they said everyone would be treated - but then that where Eon Musk asked for an ardomaddic to shoot back - only in America

in some states there are anti dumping laws where hospital are forbidden to fire an ambulance to take the indigent ( = too poor to pay) to other hospital and dump them.

but hey look at this

You have managed to divert from the point, and shoehorn racism into the thread - so no change there.

If you honestly believe that anyone accepts knife crime, then you are moving in seriously wrong circles.

And knife crime is a situation that manages to ignore racial boundaries - maybe you should try doing the same?
To be brutal but honest knives kill one at a time, the Americans allow military grade weapons which are capable of murdering large numbers quickly and from a distance, think of the Manderlay hotel shootings, it was like shooting fish in a barrel.
If the Americans accept Sandy Hook as a price worth paying for their archaic interpretation of a very old sentence then they'll never change.
