Why does it all have to be Black & White? You either agree with an adult assaulting a child ( never did me any 'arm guv'nor) or you disagree and are seen as a loony liberal. Its madness.

Thank goodness things have moved on. In the 'olden days' there was not much you could take away from a child as punishment so they got a clip around the ear ( and I got plenty of those). These days I hope, we are a bit more sophisticated in dealing with child discipline.

RockRose...........I am ashamed to say that when the trio of ummmm, JTH,RockRose,fire into action in unison, then that provokes just the response that you all three ignore......the "fight and Flight"....the "adrenaline rush".....a natural biological normal reaction that may be unique to various groups of people.

Sqad: With the danger of being reprimanded for making this 'personal' :-) I can only go on how I brought up mine, without violence at all. When you see a 13 year old cry because you have grounded him with no Internet over the weekend you may realise that withdrawal of 'privileges' for unacceptable behaviour is far stronger and effective discipline than a boot up the derriere.

Sorry Sqad I've just realised I haven't actually answered your whole question. No I don't think hitting or not hitting a child makes them any less likely to be violent as an adult. It depends on the individual personality and how they deal with what they got metered out as a child.

The bus driver's was illegal.
But I quite understand on purely neuro-physiological grounds why it happened.

On the contrary, the deliberate absence of child discipline I watched with horror 50 years ago has directly contributed to the utterly selfish Me generations we now face.

The parents blame the Teachers.The Teachers blame the parents. Parent's can't be bothered to potty train their kids before sending them off to school these days. Fact.They expect Teachers to do it!!!
Some Teachers deem it necessary to wash and launder the kids clothes.If that is not an example of total abrogation of parental responsibility then we can expect the outcome of what is occurring today . Seems like few are willing to take responsibility for their children's behaviour these days. We did not have feral savages roaming the streets with machetes killing and maiming 50 years ago when parents were allowed to discipline their children and school masters could assist in the discipline process.
The wooly liberal experiment has failed.The evidence is out there now on the streets. Deny it if you will.Most of the kids,I wager,out their roaming around with their chivs never even knew who their father was so had no decent role model to share the resposibility and no discipline to keep them on the straight and narrow

On the Grenfell thread JTH was, presumably, trying to engender sympathy for Benazir Lasharie by saying she was staying in a hotel but the staff shouted at her children for running around.
