Jerusalem has existed at least 3000 years longer than Islam yet they seem very attached to it. If I started a religion today and claimed, say, Paris has some sort of connection, then I'd be rightly, laughed off the continent so what's occurring?

OK but the Islam has not been the religion of the region until fairly recently. Palistinians were originally jewish and Christian originally, so it would be like the Scientologists claiming London as their holy city.

Because Mohammed copied his monotheism from the Judaism along with the practice of circumcision, many of the dietary rules and much of the penal code of the Torah. The original direction of prayer was toward Jerusalem. He flew to Jerusalem one night on a winged horse when he may have established one of the oldest mosques there (can't remember the details).
was established in Jerusalem.

This was part of his strategy to persuade the Arabian Jews of Medina that he was the last of the prophets foretold in the Torah.

He didn't convince them, of course, which is why he turned his back on Jerusalem prayer-wise and devised a new and more effective strategy to "convince" the sceptics of his claim to prophethood.

I'm surprised that people don't know that the "Palestinians" (i.e. Arabs) arrived in Jerusalem 1700 years after David was ruling there.

PS: they arrived as conquerors.

Someebody will be telling me next that the firsttime Jerusalem saw a Christian was when the crusaders took the city from the Muslims in 1100 AD.

Then there's the doctrinal angle. Islam divides the world in two: the House of Islam (submissive to God's Law the Sharia) and the House of War (the rest of us). Once lad has been reclaimed from the House of War by divinely ordained jihad that land is forever Muslim land.

Spelt out quite clearly with all the obvious consequences easy to infer:

“Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.” (The Martyr, Imam Hassan el-Banna)

“The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Muslim generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered; it, or any part of it, should not be given up. Neither a single Arab country nor all Arab countries, neither any king or president, nor all the kings and presidents, neither any organization nor all of them, be they Palestinian or Arab, possess the right to do that. Palestine is an Islamic Waqf land consecrated for Muslim generations until Judgement Day. This being so, who could claim to have the right to represent Muslim generations till Judgement Day?

This is the law governing the land of Palestine in the Islamic Sharia (law) and the same goes for any land the Muslims have conquered by force, because during the times of (Islamic) conquests, the Muslims consecrated these lands to Muslim generations till the Day of Judgement.” (The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement, 18 August 1988, Article Three)
