Gerard Batten calmly and incisively puts over his views, while prejudiced and vulgar Scotch bully loses it.

Sky News has become infiltrated with left wing liberals and Remoaners. Many of the good presenters seem to have left or been pushed from prime spots. Paterson is one of those presenters that seem to think he has to be aggressive to those he interviews. He is of course wrong because as you say in the OP he comes across as a bully particularly when the interviewee does not rise to the bait like on this clip.

Are UKIP finished. Two weeks ago I said yes, but with Labours new stance of pro immigration pro EU I suspect they may see an opportunity to take Labour votes in some laour heartlands where true labour voters dont have a party.
youngmaf. is right on both counts.

UKIP could be a party with the astonishing record of never having a proper MP, but have altered the course of British politics, and indeed history. I hope they, under Batten's leadership will continue as a pressure group now as politics seems to be moving more outside of parliament and people's minds are being motivated by social media, something Momentum have been successful at and in which the Tories are woefully lacking in.
Scotch is the whiskey,he is a Scottish bully
Scotch is whisky, not whiskey, that's Irish.

The job of the interviewer in these types of programme is to ask the difficult questions. Paterson on Sunday follows a similar mould to Robert Peston on Sunday.

The interview was fine, and // prejudiced and vulgar Scotch bully // is a complete over reaction to a man just doing his job.

Gerard Batten coped very well and the interview was a success for him. He had anticipated some of the questions and was well prepared. And both men ended the interview on a pleasant note because Batten know how this type of programme works.

Batten has said things in the past, so it is far to ask him about those things.
You are correct that presenters should ask difficult questions but Paterson always comes across as aggressive, not just on this one.

He (and many others on Sky News) dont seem to be able to adopt their style and in his case the accent doesnt help as it can appear aggressive to many.
He'll do for me.
I do not watch Sky News so I cannot form an opinion on Niall Paterson’s ‘style’. A Google search did not throw up much on Paterson.
But based on this interview, it was hard but fair, and Batten made a good job of it. A win win all round.
The interviewer didn't seem vulgar or a bully to me.

If you think this interviewer's manner is normal, I can only think you must move around among a rather aggressive circle of people. His ire was plain to see, he was incandescent and asked questions which were nothing less than insulting both to the man and his party.
However, Batten was an object lesson in cool-keeping, and clearly won the day by reasoned argument and intellect.
I don't think the interviewer was remotely aggressive - older AB'ers will remember the late Sir Robin Day who was far more verbally pugilistic in his political skirmishes.

I thought the UK Leader acquitted himself well, and may go some way towards negating the lousy party image he has inherited from the idiot who preceded him.
he gave a steady interview, the presenter wasn't overly aggressive, i don't think.
I had not heard of either of these gentlemen.

I do not agree that the interviewer ‘losses it,.
I do not agree that the interviewee ‘won the day’.

It was a fair interview and both men aqutted themselves well. No one lost. Both men wn.
I didn't think the interviewer was aggressive either. He actually let the interviewee finish most of his answers without interrupting him.

Compare and contrast this with the ridiculous John Humphries (who is the worst of many) who never, ever, ever lets anyone finish a sentence without rudely interrupting.

It's what they tell them at journalism school - never let anyone finish an answer, it's tantamount to letting them actually make the points they want to, and brings shame on our profession.

Obviously my idea of aggression differs from others on the thread, this is the price I have to pay for being a shrinking violet :0)
You're not a closet 'snowflake' are you Khandro?

I don't think it's a matter of 'aggression' at all.

This is a politician being interviewed by a political journalist, and they both know the format.

The interviewer is going to attempt to put the interviewee on the spot, and challenge his views, and previous statements, and he is going to use punchy assertive language and delivery to do it.

The interviewee is going to attempt to avoid being put on the spot, and to slide around any of his views which are difficult to justify, while simultaneously pitching his political message, and he is going to use reasoned calm language and delivery to do it.

This was text book political interviewing from both sides - the 'aggression' is simply part of the process.
Ludwig - // It's what they tell them at journalism school - never let anyone finish an answer, it's tantamount to letting them actually make the points they want to, and brings shame on our profession. //

I think that's a little harsh - journalists of any kind who don't allow interviewees to speak have either no print copy quotes, or no television / radio dialogue and they would not last long.

John Humphries is an anomaly - he has been a fixture at the BBC for so long that they allow him to play up to his 'Rottweiler' image to a bizarre and seriously unhelpful and unprofessional level. He gets away with rudeness and unprofessional behaviour that would not be tolerated in anyone who has not clocked up so many years that he is seen as part of the furniture - the BBC equivalent of a Tower Of London raven!

The sooner he is shunted off the airwaves, the better.

And on the subject of JH - who on earth lets him appear on Mastermind with that bizarre and ludicrous comb-over!!! You're bald man - for heaven's sake learn to live with it!!!!!!
