Catalonia was always since Roman times been an independent region of the Iberian Peninsula, with its own language, laws and customs. It is in theory at least, an autonomous region, nothing remotely like an English county.

Except that in this case a majority of voters boycotted the referendum.

Catalonia's main wine producer is switching its offices to Madrid (!) as companies queue to ensure their EU status by moving to Spain.
And one council area in the east is preparing a unilateral declaration of non-independence :-)
