I've been avoiding this for weeks but we still seem to be nowhere near any sort of solution to this so any ideas how we can make it work?

From what I recall seeing on an Irish customs prog, free movement exists but it's not free.
You need some kind of photo ID with your nationality on it so, for example, an international drivers licence won't do.

Right up to the point where the Garda at the gate basically said 'Now don't forget next time, away and have your holiday'.

Common sense even in these mental times.
It certainly straddles properties: my solution would simply be not to bother. We need fewer borders, not more. This is a completely unnecessary problem, and I am not surprised the Taoiseach has more or less washed his hands of it.
The position of the DUP here is more soncoluted than the border itself: they want a border yet they don't want the existing one fiddled with. Almost certainly the only reason they favour Brexit in the first place is to be "different" from the republic. And yet they also want to be the same.
It's scratch the head time. But I am afraid I'm with Mr Varadkar on this one: scratch your own heads :-)

If you pmsl at that then your pants must never be dry.
Ars you familiar with the EU's insistence on interfering with subjects that are rightfully the business of a member state ?
This idiotic suggestion of a sea border isn't just seen as a United Ireland, it's a massive concession/step towards it and as such is totally unacceptable. If Eire wants a united Ireland they can apply for membership of the UK. It'd get them out of the EU as an added benefit, and solve this border discussion nonsense at a stroke.

I think the UK probably agrees ich, not sure what the almighty EU thinks though.

Have you been living under a rock for the last few years? What was one of the main reasons for Brexit? And look what has happened to Europe with no borders.
Walk across the country border, or float across a channel. One can't catch all, one accepts a percentage of folk getting in but ensures best efforts to identify them.
There are roads. Your local supermarket manages to identify vehicles simply to ensure no overstay parking. Same tech tells you who's crossing the border by road.
Exaclty OG, providing the mechanism is there to deal harshly (and certainly no benefits and council houses) with the illegals then no problem.
OG, doesnt identify the occupants.

Nick a car with UK or paddy plates and no one will know who you are.
I still don't see this as a massive issue. No border is 100% secure, one just needs to monitor the situation. It isn't so different from now anyway. I doubt thousands of EU nationals are desperate to try their luck after Brexit. They don't now. So why anticipate it after.
Doesn't need to. The stolen car will turn up and the authorities are thus warned there are illegals, and tge need to check their CCTVs and other forms of detection.
It's not the main EU nationals tht will be the problem. There are swathes of new arrivals that Merkle will soon make EU citizens. Guess where many of them will head.
OG, so when thye jump out of a lorry and disappear we cant find them, what makes you think we will find them when they have dumped a stolen motor (in the middle of nowhere) unseen?
The theft is reported from where it occurred. Where it's dumped is of lesser importance but does give a clue to where to look first. It's not real difference to hiding in lorries these days. You worry to much. Campaign for a larger budget for police to investigate employers etc. if that concerned.

It is always best to fix the cause not the symptom. Stop them getting in employers cant employ them.
"It is always best to fix the cause not the symptom."

Exactly. Alas in the UK that is not the case. Employers, property owners, banks and haulage contractors are all expected to act as unpaid members of HM Border force (under threat of criminal sanctions should they fail in that unpaid duty). sanctions
The DUP will not tolerate a border. The Tories need to DUP to avoid losing a General Election, so no hard border will happen.
20000 Irish virgins on border control, both sides, Garda and the Police, should see off all the terrorists, especially those Libyan and Syrian ones, the Taliban and ISS too.....
What on earth have virgins got to do with it?
