there is a housing shortage in London, so instead of a pub they can make a few flats for the residents of Grenfell to move into if they want it.

JTH, I have no issue with gay bars, used to drink regularly in a bar in Bruxelles affectionately known by the British as the Tranny Arms. What I do have a problem with is, as in this case, where help is given in preference. It is wrong and not only that it brings Gay Bars to the fore for every nutter with a grievance. Until we stop this special treatment for small...

ZM is deliberately mis understanding, there are no heteros only bars because of the furore that would occur if anyone tried to create one. YMB is merely pointing out the obvious that ZM and his ilk refuse to see. Namely that it is perfectly acceptable to have a "Gay" bar but not a "straight" one, not to difficult to comprehend is it?
ZM, comparing a bar to an endangered species is not rational. The point I was trying to make is if gay bars are closing is it practicable to build more of them. I also resent be referred to as ignorant.

You're mistaken.

It's not a gay bar.

It's a gay friendly bar.

There is no discrimination involved. When the new bar opens, it will either succeed economically, or it will close down. If it closes, then the unit will open as something else, pending planning consent.
The councils reasoning: 'Tower Hamlets bosses will only let the site of closed gay bay the Joiners Arms be built on if the developers promise to include a pub that will 'remain a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender-focused'

Note the word 'focused' and not 'exclusive'. A subtle but important point.
LoL....
It's a bar which will be a safe space for gay people (all bars should be safe spaces for *all* people but that isn't usually true) and I'm sure that you would be welcomed there, too.

It doesn't mean that it has to be exclusively gay but it *does* mean that the straight patrons will be expected to behave with tolerance towards the gay patrons. This does *not* happen in predominently straight bars/clubs.

Tora, is deliberately misunderstanding the term gay bar.
I think you are missing my point.

Oh well I tried.
ZM, no reply to my post at 13;12?
Ha ha. Another classic AnswerBank way of trying to save face when your obviously in the wrong.
when are we all going to go around with the word 'gay' or 'straight' tattooed on our fore-heads?
Wish humans would treat other humans with courtesy and common decency.
I never said you were ignorant Danny, I said your question was. The understanding of subtlety seems to be a problem for some. My analogy wasn't the best.
If you've read my link, you should now realise the need for Gay oriented bars.
When two men can hold hands in the local Wetherspoons without somebody objecting there will be no need for gay bars.

I get your point, but it's a wrong point.

Gay friendly establishments have a reason to exist, because gay people can go there, chat someone of the same sex up knowing that in all probability that they will be gay. Therefore, there's no danger of wasting time.

That's not true in general bars.

However, time has moved on and with the popularity of apps such as Grindr, one of the roles that gay bars had has diminished a little, but there will always be a market for good gay bars, as Soho attests.
ZM, if there is such a need why are so many closing down?
You obviously haven't read the link I posted have you?

Absolutely spot on.

Brilliant point.

Two blokes kissing at the Admiral Duncan won't raise any eyebrows.

Try that at Weatherspoons, as you have said, and money on it - the "I don't want that shoved in my face" brigade will complain.

There is a need. Just not as much as there was in the past.

Market forces.
# Does your TV only have a couple of channels, trt #

Theres always one, crawling from the woodwork?

JTH:
I didnt say I watched them, I was just fed up of seeing so much viewing time being taken up on the same subject!

And for your information, I have Sky, Netflix, Amazon Prime Firestick, and a Smart TV, so there! ;-)
You are bothered about things you don't watch being on the TV?

Curious.....

The reason is down to the fact that homosexual acts were decriminalised 50 years ago, so right now, there will be many programmes reflecting on this.

Don't worry though - it'll only last a month or so.

I feel the same about the World Cup, but I acknowledge the fact that even though programmes I may want to watch may be postponed, or disrupted there are others who are footie fans for whom games are important.

I normally just ignore World Cup games and watch something else.

Like you, I have dozens upon dozens of channels to choose from, so it's no big deal.
