I thought the fuss about Trump and bans was related to his travel bans. Not this. Which apparently comes from actual intelligence and not finger in the air posturing.

Is it not a bit of a coincidence that after trying to impose a travel ban on muslim countries, that they now find evidence of a threat from those same countries er, retrospectively?

And, if there is a bomb in an iPad (none has every been found), it is safe to put it in the hold, but not as hand lugguage?

You are not banned from taking your Kindle or iPad on the plane. You are banned from using them.

Gromit, I think it's already been said that such bombs need someone to detonate them..... but not knowing much about bombs or technology, I don't know if that's true. I suspect there must be something in it though otherwise laptops would be banned from flights altogether.

Gromit; "you" are not banned, - the ban is for carry-on electronics aboard U.S.-bound flights from 10 airports in North Africa and the Middle East and was the result of information seized during the a U.S. raid on Al Qaeda in Yemen in January, of which neither you nor I know nothing. This ban, I say, isn't far removed from President Trump's 60 day immigration ban, is it?

The link that I provided then goes on to say:

Most intelligent people would know what I and the Telegraph sub-Editor meant if they bothered to read the full story.

Interesting that the handheld bomb on the Somali plane last year was detonated by a wheelchair user. Somehow he managed to evade the security at the Saudi Arabian airport the plane departed from.
What is odd, is that airport is not covered by Trump or the UK ban.

But apparently you did not understand the distinction that the ban was on use, not on devices being on the plane, and you are still whinging 24 hours later.

Is it worrying that wifi is becoming more common during flights? Would this enable a device in the hold to connect to wifi and be remotely controlled?

Of course the same could happen on a crowded bus or in any crowded place and the bomber be long gone before the explosion. It is completely normal to use a laptop anywhere and everywhere

^^ Which goes to show that Trump's ban was even smarter; he not only banned the laptop from those countries, he banned the owners as well !

Wifi only works on a plane if the plane provides a wifi signal to connect too. No UK planes supply on board wifi, and devices must have wifi turned off.
It might be possible to use a 4G mobile signal to connect to your cellular enabled Kindle or iPad, but you would have to be in range of a mobile transmitter which have a very short range.

Obviously batteries and explosives have different properties, so they can be detected at airport security devices.
The passenger from Saudi Arabia was successful because the airport security was lax. The secret is too have robust ground security.
By all means ban flights from airports that have bad security, but banning flights from airports that have better security than us is nonsense.
