Much as I would like to see some more jobs here in Wales, just what would be the point of flying to London from Cardiff ?

It only takes about 2 hours city centre to city centre by train and not much more than that by car. Considering the position of both Airports, ie well out of town, and the turning-up-at-the-Airport time required, just why would anyone fly ?

If a connection is needed for onward flights to elsewhere in the world, then good daily connections already exist to Amsterdam.

Eddie...you can do that by using Amsterdam as your hub ....the KLM Cityhopper does that twice a day. I used it to fly to Boston a few years back.
Yes I know I have used Amsterdam airport ,it is a lot better than Heathrow. I flew from Norwich to Amsterdam once when we were on holiday in Norfolk and I had to return to work in Saudi Arabia.
But some people don't like foreign airports so it gives Heathrow as an option. Plus Heathrow has a lot more onward connections than Schiphol.
^^ In fact Heathrow has more connecting flights than any other single airport in Europe !
so how is Schiphol "much better" than Heathrow Eddie?
Welsh Airlines in the making, cheap flights to Southern Argentina, a new airport for Rhyl perhaps and Holyhead? What's needed is a Methodist saints' centre in Europe (Andorra or Malta perhaps), the equivalent of Lourdes, so that Daffy Air (not Ryan) can fly between Wales and the place duly designated.
I am afraid I am old enough to recall it once called Rhoose airport when I lived in Cymru :-(
//a new airport for Rhyl//

You having a laugh.... we need an airstrip to bomb Rhyl.
that will improve the economics considerably, Togo....great idea.
It's a long time since I traveled TTT but Schiphol in those days was just one terminal. I came in on a flight from Norwich and transfered same terminal to the KLM flight to Dhahran , Saudi Arabia.
Coming back to the UK, Schiphol had the best duty free shop I have seen. It used to sell boxes of liquor chocolates with REAL full strength Whiskey ,Brandy and Rum in them. You could get seriously *** by eating them!! Never seen the same ones anywhere else .
Believe it or not I used to deliberately book flights via Schipol just to be able to buy the chocs!!
so it's much better than Heathrow because some time ago they sold decent liquors! right oh!
Well there is an advantage to vote Brexit. I knew it. We get our entitlement for Duty Free back!!
^ I was working in Saudi Arabia and the first flight out of the day was the KLM into Schiphol. Taking the KLM flight gave you nearly 1/2 a day extra back home in UK. Similarly the last flight out of Heathrow to Saudi Arabia was the Qantas flight to Melbourne with a stop in Bahrain to catch the shuttle back to Dhahran . So KLM out and Qantas back let you have an entire extra day to your UK leave.
And who would ever fly Saudi, not because it was alcohol free but the banshee screaming of the 'Allah wishes you a nice flight' prayer before take-off.

I have used Schiphol twice of the last 10 years, and I found it to be much more integrated than Heathrow.
Mikey - with on line check in the faffing about at airports is minimal.
depends what you value in an airport. I flew from eastleigh once and would rate it better than heathrow because it was very simple, no too far to the gate and had barely any people - three things i rate very highly :)
My favourite airport is Knock (west Ireland) the shop, cafe, bar, waiting area and departure gates are all in one room.
//Plus Heathrow has a lot more onward connections than Schiphol.//

that's a misconception. more airlines fly from Amsterdam to many more directly served destinations than heathrow.
We use Schiphol to fly to the US, from Norwich. The advantages are numerous, we don't have the drive the Heathrow which would add at least 4 hours to the journey, on return the immigration queue at Norwich is 10 minutes maximum, we were picked up within 20 minutes of landing. This avoids the legendary queues at Heathrow and a long drive home after an over night flight and the high parking charges at Heathrow.
the actual flight still takes an hour and a quarter

really, NJ? I make that about 80mph. Not a Concorde service, obviously.
