Jeremy Corbyn's Tax Affairs

I do not believe for one minute that Jeremy Corbyn has tried to conceal income - he doesn't seem the type, and in fact seems quite decent.

But

Given that he is taxed at source and doesn't appear to have lots of outside interests, surely he should be able to complete a tax return correctly? I'm PAYE without additional sources of income and I find self-assessment a piece of cake.

Can we trust somebody who appears to be incapable of managing their own affairs to manage the affairs of a country? (moot question (obviously) given he doesn't stand a hope in hell of ever being PM).

Well at the moment it is an allegation so lets not hang him yet.

I suspect this could be income not under PAYE. But like I say let us wait until we know before making judgement.
I am sure he can fill in a tax form. But it will be done, more accurately by an Accountant who will know what is deductable and what is not. And will be completed quicker than if the individual does it. The bill from the accountant can also be put under your expenses, so it is a no brainer to get a professional to do it, if you can afford to, and if your own time is valuable.
I expect 95% of MPs have someone else to do their tax return for them.
he got an accountant to do it for him (as I do myself). Perhaps he told the accountant to hide the fact that he was leader of the opposition, and perhaps the accountant agreed. It sounds unlikely, but we'll have to wait and see.
Much more importantly, why has our current Chancellor, Phillip Hammond refused to publish his tax returns ?

Speaking to the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, he said: "I have no intention of doing so. Just for the record my tax affairs are all perfectly regular and up to date "
IF there is a problem I would suspect a communication issue between JC and the accountant. Accountants can only put in what you tell them (which s the difficult bit and why I do mine myself). Also it is usually the junior book keeper that does these simple forms.
Mickey is it illegal not to publish your tax returns now then?
((Much more importantly, why has our current chancellor, Phillip Hammond refused to publish his tax returns?))

Not More importantly. Just as importantly is the phrase. THey should ALL, wether on the front bench, back bench opposition or part of HM government be capable of basic tax returns, especially so as they all have the resources to get the advice of accountants.
Question Author
Phillip Hammond is absolutely correct in refusing to publish his tax affairs.

His tax affairs are private. Just because Jeremy Corbyn decided to (gesture politics) it doesn't follow that other's should.

Plus, let's face it, we all know Hammond is wealthy, and therefore people would use his tax arrangements to nasally whine along the lines of 'how can Hammond appreciate what the working class endure when he's so rich' or some other such guff, while glossing over the (probably vast) amount of tax he pays.
YMB....no, I don't think it is.

But when the Leader of the Opposition has done so, openly and without any fuss, for a Tory Chancellor to give the answer he gave to Marr was arrogant and politically inept.
Proof that making a song and dance about your tax return is not a wise move.
At best it will be ignored, at worst some bright spark out of the many who will doubtless go through it with a fine tooth comb, will find an isssue with it :-)
I thought this became a non story as quickly as it became a story?

Talbot....you know as well as I do, that Hammond had published HIS return, but Corbyn had been the one to refuse, you and lots of others would have been spitting feathers by now !
What on earth are you babbling on about?
I think you will find that I and many other 'righties' have repeatedly said no to publishing any tax returns.

It was Cameron who started this nonsense...

// Sunday 10 April 2016
At midnight on Saturday, David Cameron’s office published “a summary and explanation of the prime minister’s tax affairs going back six years”. It was not his complete tax returns, but a schedule prepared by chartered accountants RNS, based in Brigg, north Lincolnshire. RNS makes it clear that the figures are based on those from Cameron’s self-assessment forms. //
Load of old pony, all this publish tax returns cobras is, well cobras. If anyone is evading prosecute, avoiding, congratulate. Simples!
Well he could ask Trump to help him fill in his tax return, Trump is very good at
avoiding payment of tax.
// I suspect this could be income not under PAYE.// YMF

have another read of ITTOIA (income tax ( trading and other income ) Act 2005 and tell me how this could be

paid by the gubmint apparently

and how can you be paid as leader of the oppositiion and be self employed for chrissakes .....

( altho I agree if it were paid - then income tax would be taken off at source and so the tax adjustment would be slight ( but probably not zero - I notice he has a reduced tax free amount as he is over £100k)
// What on earth are you babbling on about?// talbo

talbo we read the script and then we understand what "he is babbling on about".

if the tables were turned then the usual suspects would be squawking - is the meaning of the script

alternatively - if the mistake had been made by another politician besides Corbyn - there would be shouts of dismay and disapproval.
