Oh that's all right then.

They just want to make sure EU citizens in the U.K. Are allowed to stay.

If that is the only amendment they are going to go for then good for them. However I think they have about 50 to wheel in.

In any case why are they not prepared to accept that TM has said their status won't change but any right to stay will be reciprocal from other EU countries. What is wrong with that? I am honestly at a loss to see what is wrong with expecting like for like treatment.

I currently have a client I work with, who is an eastern European. He came here 10 years ago, and set up a business employing 10 people.
I doubt he will stay because the odds are being set against him.
I reckon a lot of businesses run by foreigners will fold, and jobs will be lost.
Please explain the odds against him?
Quite sure I know more Poles than Gromit.
Only six months ago (POST-Brexit) had two guys replace conservatory roof. Good job and cheap. Insisted on £1500 being paid in cash. Can't work that out.
Hardly good for them. They are supposed to be part of a democratic government system and ought not be delaying things over a desire to tie negotiators' hands in advance when the people have already made the democratic decision to leave.
Anyone who came here 10 years ago can easily apply for UK citizenship if they wish to reside here.

You are right cassa, we should not give away our hand and leave the EU with the whipping stick of our EX-pats that they WILL use against every single 'negotiation'. May must fight on and put the undemocratic Lords in their place.

//I reckon a lot of businesses run by foreigners will fold// No, most are very astute and will sell them as going concerns.
// why are they not prepared to accept that TM has said their status won't change but any right to stay will be reciprocal from other EU countries.//

confusion yesterday when the EU citizens who were staying and paying their taxes were told to get more health insurance ( even tho their taxes were going to wards the NHS and hhow ! )

[if their right to stay is ended or changed
then their status has changed - duuuh ....]
I may have misheard but I'm sure on BBC breakfast this morning they said this was about protecting the rights of the 3 million migrants living here and the 1 million(yes 1 million) Brits living abroad.

3-1 are these figures correct.

Dave.

committed remainers seem to think their ploys to amend any action, article or negotiation with items that have been addressedas at this stage are just them being the only ones who care about the subject. Are they all so deluded that they think we are all going to have a light bulb moment of Doh, I never thought of that!?

Remainers have fallen into the trap they accuse Bretixer of. All faff and no substance and sound bite rhetoric. Even us uneducated plebs can see they are asking for something For no good reason.

I recon that if the Lords piddle about too much they will find that there is a much more motivated call for the abolition of the HOL

Just read this.

As I said they are trying to tie the hands of the government for A reason already explained.

If they carry on I will be amongst those calling for their abolition.
Regardless of this Lords vote they need to go and become an elected body (with reduced numbers).
This is just their lordships making a point, bit of ping pong and Tezza gets her way. Nothing to see here.

Could the lords stop brexit if they wanted?
“Could the lords stop brexit if they wanted?”

No. The best they could do would be to delay it by up to 12 months. The Commons can use the Parliament Act to override a veto by the Lords but the legislation allows for up to 12 months delay.

“3-1 are these figures correct.”

Yes, I believe so, webbo. It seems to me that on insisting on this amendment their Lordships are more concerned about the welfare of the 3m foreigners living here than they are about the 1m ex-pats living in the EU. It is quite clear that if this amendment is passed the Euromaniacs will hold in their hand a strong bargaining chip; they will know that the rights of the 3m living in the UK are guaranteed whilst having made no such reciprocal pledge about the 1m UK citizens living abroad.

Quite frankly there should be no entertaining any such amendments. The Bill is about triggering A50 and nothing else. No negotiations can begin until it has been triggered and any pre-conditions placed on the negotiators will simply stymie their position.

“He came here 10 years ago, and set up a business employing 10 people.

Perhaps I could also ask you to expand a little, gromit. Many thousands of people from outside the EU have settled in the UK and set up businesses here without the privileges of coming from an EU member nation. They seem to have done OK. There is little to no chance of the EU citizens in the UK being kicked out post Brexit with or without their Lordships’ amendment. So how are the odds set against your client?
Cassa, I never normally point out typos or grammatical errors on AB. We all type quickly and it's easy done. But you do consistently use the term "Bretix" when the accepted form is "Brexit" (i.e. "BRitish EXIT").

Love your questions and answers so please don't think I'm being petty or insulting because that's not my intention.

Cheers for that NJ
The Lords did overturn the decriminilisation of not having a TV licence.
And some other matter relating to benefits.
I presume the government 'gave up without a fight' in those recent cases.
There is little doubt in my mind that many who are being difficult over article 50 are hoping that they will succeed in stopping it happening.

I am more and more coming to the feeling that we don't need the House of Lords any more.

What do the House of Lords do anyway?

They have no day to day power, that is for the government so why are they hanging around for two minutes a day collecting attendance fees when they only need to think about stuff now and then!??
