AOG - //Does it make one a bigot if one does not choose to live next door to a travellers site, or to have one at the bottom of one's garden? Or does it only work if Muslims are concerned? // Choosing to live, or not to live, anywhere does not make someone a bigot. A bigot is intolerant towards an entire grouping of people. You can have reservations about the behaviour...

Jesus wept! Do you never give up?

They've even made it snow, for that extra whiteness :-)
//"We can see large Muslim communities in western Europe that haven't been able to integrate - and we don't want to have the same experience here,"//

^There’s the reason. They’re not trying to create a white Utopia, they’re simply trying to protect what they have, and having seen some of the areas they’re talking about I can’t say I blame them for that.

Ichy.....you will have noticed, as others have missed, that it just isn't Muslims, but gay people as well that are being discriminated against here.

I suppose the good aspect of this affair, is that no Gay and/or Muslims would ever want to live in this place any more, even if they did in the first place.
//Many lawyers think the laws contravene the Hungarian constitution and, as part of a general review of new local legislation, the government will rule on them in mid-February.//

Should be interesting...

Mikey, I would imagine that given the alternative conditions that many of these people are used to,/fleeing from, the village would have made plenty of appeal in the first place wouldn't it?
Hungary's a long way to go for insular, segregated living.
Easier to get to former mill towns in Yorkshire and surrounding area.

Vortex....that doesn't really run true. This isn't the only place in that part of the world that have bigoted residents.

What his chap has done is to provide a much-needed indication that Gay and/or Muslim people would not be welcome there.
"no Gay and/or Muslims would ever want to live in this place any more, even if they did in the first place. "

In a couple of years the mayor can claim his policy was a success :-)
It's all rather ghoulash behaviour.
when you off?

mikey; I was recently in Budapest and didn't see any burkas or indeed any signs of a Muslim presence in Hungary, to find out why you should aquaint yourself with the country's history;
"How the Hungarians stubbornly fought back the Turks for two centuries, saving Austria, Prussia and Poland from the Islamic Jihad."
Start here please; http://www.historyofjihad.org/hungary.html
//One resident, Eniko Undreiner, said it was "really scary" to see "masses of migrants walking through the village" last year as they crossed into the country.

"I spend a lot of time at home alone with my young kids - yes, there were times when I was scared," she says.//

If residents felt like that I imagine that's where it's come from. I have to say I can understand that reaction. I'd find that alarming too.

Khandro....and the issue of banning gays in this Village ?

How does that fit in with ancient history ?
hmm - you would probably have to speak Hungarian too....

Dont try Mikey - it isnt an Indo European language ( = easy to learn) but altaic-ugaritic ( v v difficult) like Finnish.

( erm sorry getting a bit technical there)
History
did someone mention "ee-stwar"?

Yeah - mikey look at the renaissance (1550-1600) in Hungary
particularly east of the Danube

there isnt one

just five hundred years of Turkish ( er who were muslims ) domination - no roads, no mobiles no ipads no absolutely nothing - not even efficient administration - nice buildings ? forget it flat boxes......

and then Don John of Austria beats the crap out of them along with Jan Sobievski - and Vienna threatened in 1684 is unthreatened ( hey alternative fact there ! ) - and free!

sorry folks a bit of Hungarian 'ees-twar' there....

back to 3T - "Hungary - wot dat den ? come to think of it I am a bit....."

mikey; I don't expect you will read my link, as you really don't want to learn anything, but at least you could read your own. They are not banning gays, but "public displays of affection" and having once seen a lot of this in a 'Zurich Gay Weekend' I agree with them entirely. Your link says;
"The new local legislation bans the wearing of Muslim dress like the hijab and the call to prayer and also outlaws public displays of affection by gay people."

Khandro, watering it down to 'displays of public affection' does not suit Mikeys Agenda.
Banning Gays is much better for his purpose.
Question Author
Khandro....then you would appear to be condoning homophobic behaviour.

OK for a man and a woman to hold hands in public, but not two chaps !
