Given that Britain discovered the Falklands in 1690 and claimed them in 1765, 11 years before the land now known as Argentina became a Spanish colony and 94 years before Argentina became an independant country I cannot see why Britain should not equally claim Argentina as British territory ...with Jezza as dictator.

##In her interview, Ms Castro said that Mr Corbyn “shares our concerns”, adding: "In short, he is one of "ours"." ##

Well, I wondered what he was, now we know!

Must be such a golden time to be a Labour MP.
If he is "one of theirs" maybe he shoud go and live there
//Mr Benn is firmly opposed in any change to Labour’s policy on the Falklands and has not met with any Argentinian representatives//

oh dear. in terms of his avoiding the sack at the last reshuffle, Mr Benn is not exactly keeping his side of the bargain by taking such a stance, is he?
What Mr Corbyn wants is as irrelevant as he is.
If there had been something dodgy about the Falklands' vote as is alleged in the article, would there not have been dozens of folk saying they had voted against staying British rather than the three that was declared?

Naomi, I'm sure it's not irrelevant to Labour MPs and party faithfulls.
so he wants to force 98% of the population to accept a government they don't want, that's how labour like their "democracy".
"In a 2013 column for The Guardian, Mr Milne wrote: “Whenever there's a 99.8 per cent yes vote in a referendum, it's a pretty safe bet that something dodgy's going on."

I'd be interested to know what Milne's view of the Crimean "referendum" would be then.
Just a small point of info, but Ms Castro plainly doesn't understand NI apart from anything else. A NI-style power-sharing agreement in the Falklands would have to be one between two political aspirations resident on the actual islands. Maybe one where humans and sheep shared power ...
yes in a decent sized country ich but both the Falklands and Gibraltar are small enough that the validity can easily checked, you'll be hard pressed to find someone in either of those places that does not want to remain British.

Yes Mr Milne.....the other reason for a 99.8% result comes from asking a stupid question to which the answer is obvious to anyone with half a brain.
I'm fairly sure ich was inverting the argument, ie there's a certain hypocrisy amongst the (far) left's attitude to the Falklands (huge support for staying British but free and fair referendum is untrusted) and the Crimea (huge support for leaving a country after an almost certainly corrupt process but result is respected because it's all down to Western suppression and aggressive expansionist NATO policy).

Annoyingly, the views of these referenda are in some sense consistent. Consistently wrong, that is.
jim; The two cases don't match. The claim by Ukraine to Crimea was/is based on a very dodgy legal grounds, Kruschev gave it to them, (though it hardly mattered as they were all then part of the USSR). It was done at an un-minuted meeting and surprised everyone concerned. It had been part of Russia for centuries before.

The British have a much stronger case to the sovereignty of the Falklands.
Perhaps it's time everybody respected the wishes andposition of the people of the Islands rather than apply big world thinking to something that really is their individual right to determine, as they did, let them live the way they choose. thesooner Corbyn crawls back under his rock the better
As I've mentioned before, I visited the Falkland Islands before they became famous (at a time when very few people could find them on a map of the world).

Instead of fannying about in the mud in Calais Mr Corbyn should get the RAF to ferry him down to the South Atlantic to meet the islanders (so long as he pays the full fare). He will find a group of people who are fiercely British, want nothing to do with Argentina (with many of them suggesting they would rather die than succumb to its rule) and who actually have no significant impact on the UK at all. He will also quickly learn that the result of their referendum was in no way fixed.

It is unfortunate that since 1982 disproportionate sums of money have had to be spent providing defence for the islands and this amounts to around £18k pa per islander. This, however, is scarcely their fault. Having said that, the cost of keeping any one of the people Mr Corbyn met in the mud yesterday would undoubtedly equal or exceed that and in return we would have to accommodate people who have no allegiance to this country, no particular ties to it and, in many cases, actually despise it and its values. So on balance I think I’d prefer my £18k to fund a few squaddies and erks (who, if they were not in the Falklands would probably be in some Middle Eastern cesspit “keeping the peace”) rather than to provide a council flat and copious benefits to keep a “Jungle” occupant in the manner to which he would very soon become agreeably accustomed.
Gawd help us. Port Stanley would become the Russian South Atlantic fleet station before Jezza could utter "comrade"
quite correct jomifl, sadly those facts do not stop the Argies claiming them and the anti British supporting that claim.
I am now fully convinced that JC is a Tory mole busilly hammering nails in Labour's coffin.

I am also enraged at his support for the Argies re the Falklands in view of the fact that the inhabitants are totally loyal Britain and want to remain British.

And also for the fact that so many British troops died to defend the Falklands, I am totally speechle........
