Diesel 'fumes' ?
no surprise to me I never believed all that pony anyway. just stand next to one, sounds like a bag of spanners and smelly black smoke comes out, the clues are there.
Question Author
I think the word 'Fumes' is dumbing down the technicalities of 'pollutants' for general consumption for the less scientific T readers.
A completely different approach to that shown against cigarettes.

I wonder if they will now ban all advertising of diesel vehicles, put them behind closed screens in car showrooms, increase the cost of them and ban them from pub car-parks?

Perhaps also those that are always going on about smokers will now get rid of their more dangerous pollutant belching cars?

AOG

A non-smoker.
Goodness me! Politicians being sparing with the truth? How unexpected.

Lying, cheating, gouging weasels to a man and woman.

Self interest
Other politicians interest
Interests of the rich
Interests of the country
Interests of the public

Not an exhaustive list but I think one that reflects the truth where the scheming scumbags are concerned.
It's all just a game they play.

Interesting point AOG. Let's see what happens. Bigger than the expenses scandal IMO.
I find it strange that lorries and buses aren't mentioned.
Question Author
They don't have an alternative fuel type.
Has anyone thought about using horses to pull busses? At least their 'pollutants' can be used on the gardens. I'm half serious here. Horse-drawn transport could convey goods from parking areas out of cities to their destinations. If canals were to be used for their original purposes that would also cut lorry emissions - obviously it wouldn't work for perishable goods! I know it sounds daft, but think about it. It would need a lot of pre-planning. I expect I'll be shouted down, but it's a nice idea. :)
Get rid of all the Black cabs from the towns and cities.
You must buy smokes regularly to continue smoking. You buy the car once, it has to have diesel to work. Smoking is unnecessary, getting around isn't. If you sell the car it still exists, someone uses it. You aren't going to scrap it to please those unable to see what is and isn't comparable. Why is this comparison nonsense stated every possible time ? Isn't it clear yet no point is ever made ?
@Zacs Master

I genuinely don't know whether you want "quite shocking" to be taken literally or treated as sarcasm. To whit and viz..

//Suggestions of collusion between governments and the motoring industry have been bolstered by an allegation from a former transport minister that David Cameron agreed to delay imposing a new emissions limit after a personal request by Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, to protect her country’s motor industry. //

Question Author
Genuinely. Do you not find the situation very serious?
@Zacs-master

It certainly is serious.

I just wanted to know if you were as cynical as I already was about how corporations are able to bend governments to their will, lobby for test standards which favour their products, hurt competitors' products and generally clean up, to the tune of billions?

And still get tax breaks?

We have the temerity to call it democracy, when δεμος (demos) means 'the people' and we are clearly not in charge at all.

I know someone who drives a bus and know she would not be happy with trying to drive a horse.
I bought a Skoda just a month before the VW scandal broke and yes it does have that engine.
Apart from a half -hearted apology letter from the manufacturer I have heard nothing to indicate what the real impact is going to be when the car is recalled next year. all we are told is that the software will be reprogrammed and certain adjustments may be necessary.
Given that there are lots of techies out there that know what they are talking about, does anyone know yet what VW are up to, and I don't mean the desparate media spinning to try to recover their share price. I do mean what will be the effect on performance, especially mpg.
