Why are they given the opportunity to vote for independence when the Basque Country were going to have a referendum on their independence back in 2008 but was blocked by Spain’s Supreme Court at the behest of its government.

Spoke to a guy at one of the Tourist Info Centres last time I was in Spain. He said the Scots were so lucky to be having a referendum as the Catalan people would love one too. Now is their hour so be interesting to watch.

The Catalans don't have a terrorist group claiming to represent them AOG. Slightly different scenario.

The votes to-day are for Parliamentary seats and not a referendum. If a majority vote for independence parties then it will lead to a call for separation.
