If 'selfies' from ISIS supporters were actually helpful to the American air force would they be telling the world about it?

No, GPS oordinates are added to photos by phones, unless you turn off that feature. Still don't miss a chance to have a go at the West eh?

If these selfies are helpful wouldn't that be more reason to keep the fact secret?
It's so obvious though that you don't need to keep it a secret
It's not a secret, it's common knowledge to most people with any sort of tech knowledge, even IS, this must a lapse from one of the more stupid operatives who is probably dead from US bombs or his buddies.
It was probably a one off. It will not be a method that they can deploy often.

ISIS are very information technology sussed. They use social media as a propaganda weapon. There will be strict rules about not revealing locations and identities. In this case, one wally has ignored the protocol and revealed where they were.

The US will be constantly monitoring all communications and will have pinpointed enemy positions many times from conventional radio transmissions.

So the story is largely for propaganda purposes, and revealing someone from the compound had uploaded a selfie, will not hamper future strikes.
As I was bang on at the start, that's got to be a best answer Sandy.
Isn't it possible that a 'double agent' identified the compound and this is a good cover story.
When a war is on, and we are at war it is just a different style, propaganda is required on both sides to keep moral up.

So what better way than to put out something like this that most people are aware of. You have given nothing away as such but provided a positive news story.

Unless one is a member of the anti West brigade of course, in which case you may well see it in a different view.
That's quite possible Svejk.

Who cares though, so long as they got to bomb a few of them?
It seems this works both ways.

I found reference to this little publicised incident...

// When a new fleet of helicopters arrived with an aviation unit at a base in Iraq, some Soldiers took pictures on the flightline, he said. From the photos that were uploaded to the Internet, the enemy was able to determine the exact location of the helicopters inside the compound and conduct a mortar attack, destroying four of the AH-64 Apache Helicopters. //

Let's hope they don't start taking selfies in front of GCHQ, The Pentagon, etc. You know how US the US are.
OMG you dont mean that Doughnut shaped building like the Pentagon only er round just off the M5 at Glos ? oops

Presumably Isis has guessed what had happened and banned selfies before the story broke.

I always thought the way they tracked down the Balcombe St gang 1973 ( see wiki ) by drenching London with plain clothes police cars and oops hey one just found itself tracking an IRA active service unit on its way to bomb somewhere - - I always thought was suspicious ....
They know all along where everyone is. There are the ones who are behind them.
Colonel Purnell and the patrolling PS were both uniformed officers. They were in the Duty Officers car as Inspetor Purnell was the D/O.All police GP cars and D/O's cars were unmarked and were Hillman Minx's at the time. They were fitted with a radio and a bell.Nothing else to distinguish them from a civilian car. Insp Purnell was patrolling his patch (Paddington Green) when the bombers car was chased along Lisson Grove prior to bailing out and running to Balcome St. Nothing to be suspicious about .Good fortuitous policing. I served at the original and new Paddington Green for the beginning of my service. Insp (Colonel) Purnell was my relief D/O.
