Naomi - //How can we differentiate? They were all mentally deranged. //

I disagree.

The levels and reactions to mental illness are as varied and complex as the people who suffer from them.

The 911 bombers would appear ‘deranged’ because of the enormity and savagery of their actions, but that does not mean that they were clinically insane in the medical sense of the term.

Similarly, Mr Lubitz appears to have been in the grip of a psychotic episode, but again I am speculating, which is futile.

You and I can count on some direct and indirect experience, but what fits one situation almost never fits another.

Apart from the use of a plane, and mental instability, all other factors are, and will remain unknown.
andy-hughes, Spare me the lofty lecture. Anyone who purposefully crashes a plane full of people isn't 'all the ticket'. I think that's a given.
Would it be legal to inform employers? Patient confidentiality?

There's no need to be rude.

Other people have views and opinions to express, and to read as well - that is what the site is about.

If you feel lectured, then assume the comment was not aimed soley for your benefit - which would be correct - it wasn't.
Not currently legal but perhaps it should be for certain professions such as this?
andy-hughes, Not rude - factual. If your comment wasn't intended solely for me why address it to me?
quite an interesting question and worthy of a good debate. but. alas descends to a slanging match :(
anneasquith, Don't jump the gun. Hopefully after just a few posts any potentially impending slanging match has been halted in its tracks.
No
No, Lubitz was a nutter who wanted to knock himself off and, unfortunately, a few others. 9/11 was about undermining democracy, western confidence and possibly even values.
//9/11 was about undermining democracy, western confidence and possibly even values.//

.... and perpetrated by nutters. ;o)
brainwashed nutters, naomi.....
Indeed.
He seems to have had this, or something like it, in mind for a while, although I'm not sure that there's any real evidence yet to suggest that it was meticulously planned or anything. It may be as simple as being depressed and crashing the plane he was flying seen as a natural way to end his life if he felt that it had to come to that. I don't think there is a comparison with the 9/11 plotters.

These are fundamentally different incidents, and comments about "mentally deranged" seem to be confusing two very different mindsets borne of different origins. The end result is tragically similar, but no I don't think he is as bad as the 9/11 or 7/7 plotters.
Brainwashed? Obviously have to be careful which Conditioner is used
// //change the system// doctors should warn employers of patients unfit to work.//
// Would it be legal to inform employers? Patient confidentiality?//

well spotted that girl
a doctors surgery is NOT the first stop to either the police station or the dole queue ( would the employer have done anything besides fire him )

for the rather durrr reason that one wouldnnt go to a doctor when youre ill if that were the case ...

rather obvious exceptions - child abuse - and stabbing and gun wounds have to be reported to the police....

RIP those poor kids
There is a difference between mentally ill and evil. The terrorists were evil (no excuses about brainwashing). Lubitz- who knows?
Ultimately they were all people that made a decision to commit mass murder for their own twisted reasons. Although still early to say, It seems both atrocities were planned in advance.

Therefore, both as bad.

I can't agree.

There is no doubt that 911 was planned and executed in order to create the maximum impact in terms of horror and distress.

But I don't believe that this was the motivation behind Mr Lubitz action - if it was, he would have crashed into a town or city to cause the maximum death and destruction.

I have no doubt that creating such havoc may have been in his mind, but I would suggest that his main motivation was to die.

But again, we are speculating, and cannot and will never know.
