/// They added: “The typical fictional homicide is part of a planned series committed by a middle-aged white man or woman who is not intoxicated, sometimes using a bizarre weapon. In contrast, real homicides were almost all single, and were usually carried out by often intoxicated younger men from a more diverse ethnic origin, in an unplanned attack using a kitchen knife. They were also more likely to have a diagnosed mental disorder.” ///

In the quest to include more ethnic minorities actors in such mainly white TV shows such as Midsomers Murders, perhaps these could be cast as killers, so as to correct this inaccuracy?

the programme, as i mention, is like Morse, completely and utterly unrealistic, no place has that many murders, like watching Emmerdale, without the laughs. x
My goodness, like sp1814 I simply don't know where to start! Maybe I should just say that they are all actors, speaking words that other people have written. They get well paid to do this so any resemblance to actual events is purely incidental.
// so many homicides in such a relatively small place, would likely see half the population being done away with //

In my town our local doctor dispatched 300 people and no one noticed until the local undertaker realised they were working too hard.
sp, it is probably the beginning of a campaign to make bizarre middle class murder methods more accessible to ethnic minorities. ''Arsenic poisoning for yardies' perhaps or 'Electrocution made easy'.
one man, who just happened to be a doctor. someone that most of us actually trust,
if you meant Harold Shipman?

/// Totally agree. I only hope this isn't indicative of a lowering of the Indy's standards. ///

/// It almost looks like a hoax report which they've fallen for. ///

Perhaps a Daily Mail reporter sneaked into the Independent's building and dropped a copy into their in-tray.

Two separate links one from the Independent and one from the BBC, I bet this is playing hell with your usual anti Daily Mail feelings, best thing for you to do is to ignore all media outlets and just keep your head buried firmly in the sand.

The insinuation being that the majority of people in this country cannot distinguish between fact and fiction.
the fact that midsomers is unrealistic is the reason that i watch it
I reckon they had this ready for April 1 and some fool published it early.
anyone who watches it knows it not representative, it's escapist entertainment.

*** On Monday, eight people were gunned down outside a London
nightclub. ***

Wow eight people in one night???????????

So maybe Midsomers Murders isn't so unrealistic after all?

But having said that then perhaps it is, because all the killings in that show are committed by whites, so I agree there should be more black actors to make it more realistic.
Most murders and their solution are boring and would make crap telly. Which is why we make up exciting ones for entertainment.
"Perhaps a Daily Mail reporter sneaked into the Independent's building and dropped a copy into their in-tray."

Well, that would make sense!

"I bet this is playing hell with your usual anti Daily Mail feelings"

Hell no. The Daily Mail will always be head and shoulders above it's rivals when it comes to making up stuff. I mean today it's Leonardo DiCaprio, but last week it was lies about the storms!

Interesting to see that AOG is still using his own threads to maintain his relentless defence of the Daily Mail - for reasons which frankly baffle the rerst of us.

As far as fiction representing reality - why would it? That would make it a documentary, not a drama.

Dramas are popular simply because that is what they are - there is no intention, or indeed epxectation, for the mimicing or mirroring of reality.

EastEnders is always a great example - if it was 'real life', every one of the residents would either have sold their houses for eight figures (they are in walking distance of a tube station for heaven's sake!), or they would have rapidly tired of the ugly and nasty people they live alongside, and moved out a long time ago.

As it is, a collection of seriously nasty and miserable characters live cheek-by-jowl constantly scheming and plotting and screaming at each other, with very little serious progress made - and it attracts massive audiences because it is entirely fictional, and the viewing public buy into that.

If you want documentaries, watch David Attenborough - drama is what it is - lofty analysis is a waste of newsprint and mental energy.

"So maybe Midsomers Murders isn't so unrealistic after all?"

Is Midsomer Murders set in and around London's club scene?

I've never watched the show, so perhaps you could shed some light?
Thanks for the lofty analysis, Andy.
The Independent has a sense of humour. Ask yourselves why else it would publish this, a fine example of psychiatrists taking themselves, and entertainment, far too seriously, and publish it without comment
