Should the referee have suspended play? What other measures can stop this?

but that isn't happening clarys, so until it does players should walk off.
No, AOG....I think a stand should be made.

I don't want my kids following a sport that shrugs off racism, or abuse of any kind.
Zeuhl

Good luck with that one.

I expect to hear nothing but silence on that (particularly well-observed) point.
Those who racist chant at matches over here are liable to be arrested/prosecuted/banned from grounds

Meanwhile in the lf Spain and Italy the authorities seem to just ignore it

Even Spain's national team manager got in the act a few years ago and all he got was a slap on the wrist and a paltry fine

Zeuhl are you seriously comparing silly brainless comments made by football supporters to a footballer, with radical Muslims disrespecting our Troops who have given the ultimate sacrifice to their Country?
ClaryS

The principle is exactly the same...it's words, so why can't they be 'shrugged off'?
Ummmm the sport is not 'shrugging off' racism. They should have guidelines in place for when this happens instead of people just randomly walking off. Spectators should be given warning that if 'X' happens then 'Y' will follow. That said, the individual who is being abused should not ignore it, but make light of it, don't give them the satisfaction that you have taken it personally but know that it will be addressed through due process.
ClaryS

I think the point is 'who is offended'?

You might think that black people should just shrug off racism and not be offended by it...so should the same be true of those who were offended by the Muslim fundamentalist protesters?
clarys

Yes

I'm comparing football hooligans disrespecting our football players representing our Clubs with radical Muslims making silly brainless comments about our Troops who have given the ultimate sacrifice to their Country?

If 'shrugging off' is the answer to one why not the other?

Please explain how you switch from one principle to the other

Please explain the difference
ClaryS

How.

How does the player 'make light of it'?

Can you give an example of what you would do in that position?

Let's say you has supporters shouting '**** off back to Africa, you black ****'

What would you do to 'make light' of the situation?
My son has a squint....if one person among 1,000's called him a cock eyed so and so I would be highly offended.

I wouldn't shrug it off and I wouldn't expect him to shrug it off....

(nb...I'm not really comparing racism to lazy eyes....but hopefully you get my drift)
Well, give me £125,000 a week, 2 or 3 prestigious cars, female adulation, a bloody great house...................and monkey signs wouldn't bother me a jot.
There was an ABer who was fond of calling all right thinking persons such as myself 'knuckle draggers'.

What was my answer to that abuse, I designed a 'Knuckle dragger's' avatar and attached that to my user-name.

But then that ABer was not on his own, there are others on AB who although they like to take the high ground on racist chants etc they themselves show no hesitation whatsoever at showering abuse against other ABers.
oh come on sp

you know how you folks' faces light up when you smile :-)
But you're white....so you don't really know what it's like!!
Sqad

And if you were a black teenager at the match who'd gone along with no idea that you'd be standing listening to that?

How would you feel then?
That was to Sqad!
sp

\\\\And if you were a black teenager at the match who'd gone along with no idea that you'd be standing listening to that? \\\

Sorry....I have read that 2 or 3 times and can't understand what you are getting at.....

ummmm...I don't know, cus I'm not black.
why should someone "make light of it" when they are being racially abused

are you serious?
Sqad, your point implies that if you are rich and adored racism doesn't matter.
