On Sky news, we have just watched the headmistress of Bucklebury Primary School tell all her pupils that the new royal baby will grow up to be the King of England. She repeated it again in an interview. How can she be so ignorant? What about the Welsh, the Scots, the Northern Irish? He will be their king too. It's enough to make me vote YES in next years referendum.

A Scottish cousin if mine was a junior officer in the Army Medical Corps in the 1950s. At Dining-In Nights in officers' messes, a loyal toast is proposed by one of the youngest officers present. When my relative was told it was his turn, he told his superior in no uncertain terms that - if the latter insisted - he would propose the health of "Queen Elizabeth the First". He was excused the task! As a National Serviceman, he could hardly be threatened with any career-threatening action. Good on 'im!
the thrones were united long before the countries were, and under a Scottish king, so it makes perfect sense for Salmond to propose retaining the monarchy. If the English want to pull out of the deal and proclaim their own monarch, perhaps of non-Scottish descent, they can do so.
She's not wrong, he could well be a future King of England. Maybe she's as adverse to adopting a 'united' identity just as much as our Scottish, Welsh and Irish cousins are?
What a lot of silly fuss about nothing !
Jno Eliz the first or second

No sorry - James - he of the Kingdom of Great Britain
passed a law - titular act 1603 - which said my name will be
James VI and I and I will be King of Great Britain and Ireland

You will note Pope Francis is not Francis I
so james ' s action here really was a erm first !

Our present Queen - doubtless cognisant that there had been no queen Eliza of Scotland - had a titular act 1953 I think,
and is ter daah - Queen Eliz II of the United Kingdom

One of the Austrian Emperors goes around as Francis (I) II
if that is any help
I always thought he called himself James one-and-six so he could get a seat in the dress circle while James ninepence sat in the stalls.
Peter P, are you sure that isn't his emoticon/symbol ?

I rather think if you put the II under the (I), they appear to be a couple of legs.
They should name him Elvis. Then he will be "The King"
I can't get too worked up about that. Not when the British Olympic team calls itself Team GB ...
One day he could be King....until Chuck Norris decides otherwise.
... perhaps one day we will be a proper grown-up country and decide to get rid of this nonsensical belief that an accident of birth can fit you to be the figurehead for our country.
I agree sunnydave but I fear that if that does happen, we will be long in our graves.
yes and I noticed no black or Asian children in the community or in playgroup
Maybe by the time he becomes king 60 years or what ever it might not mean all that much to those like myself in their early 40s
so what should the British Olympic team call itself ichteria?
Strictly true, though, wasn't it? Forget the Welsh anyway. Wales has been legally and constitutionally part of England for some 700 years.
Pretty much a shire Fred.
Shouldn't that 'r' be a 't', Octo?
"yes and I noticed no black or Asian children in the community or in playgroup"
So what? there are some parts of the world that have no black or asian children in it. My nursery for example has no asian children (as far as i know) I don't think they deliberately exclude them though!
"so what should the British Olympic team call itself ichteria? "

Team UK would be an improvement....
