Even a PM must act within the laws parliament have laid down and judges have interpreted.

Is the person who told him not mentioned on the news sites ?
You seem to be confusing the term "Prime Minister" with "Emperor of all he surveys"
:-)

I think the difference is that the PM is not the employer so possibly can't dictate a salary raise ban. That said, we are, and should be able to.

Call it what you like kevink, Prime minister or Emperor. they are still a load of thieving cons.
In fairness, MPs are subject to an independant pay review by IPSA, the body set up to monitor expenses and pay. Several MPs have already come out and said publically that now is not the time for MPs to be talking about the pay rise. Milliband has said that, were a big pay rise implemented and Labout got into power at the next election, he would reverse it ( although that is easier said than done), and Cameron has said that he might favour a pay rise - but only if the overall costs of MPs remained frozen or reduced. so that would mean a reduction what can be claimed for expenses.

I will be interested to see what IPSA recommend. Personally, I do not think they are worth any more than they currently get. Your standard MP gets £65,000 pa, those selected as government ministers get an additional salary - In addition to a generous the expenses scheme and pension plan, as well as a lump sum resettlement payment if they lose office.

And do not forget that taxpayer also picks up the tab for all their office costs,( currently allowed up to £100,000 per year) including hiring family members as secretaries, PAs or researchers.

Instead of whining about how draconian the rules are regarding what they can claim on expenses, they should just live with it like everyone else on salary plus expenses has to. They should also accept a pay settlement in line with public sector employees - a 1% annual pay rise, so a real-terms paycut since inflation is running at around 2.5%.......

Personally, I do not think they warrant a pay rise, certainly not unless the expenses system is drastically trimmed, and, frankly, their numbers- do we really need 650 MPs? or 1000 Lords/Ladies?

^^ no argument with that, hawksley

Who is their employer OG?? IF it is the tax payer did you approve the pay rise? because I would like to block it.
They are public servants, so of course the public is their employer. I think you must have signed the form without paying attention, and letting the rest of us know.
Given the present circumstances there should be NO pay rise to MP's.

Even if the economy was better they should not get it.

Looks like they are after Brazil type riots!

It was john bercow the speaker, who told cameron not to block the pay rise, just to appease the Public
it will be as usual they will get their pay rise we will forget about it in a few weeks!
Of course they need a pay rise......£65,000 basic pay for an MP......nonsense.
GP...well in excess of £90,000.
Would you go for a MP's salary if your talents could get you £100,000+....I wouldn't.

I agree with Lazygun about reducing the number of MP's and also abolish expenses and give them £100,000.

Pay peanuts........you get........
Who has told Cameron that he can not block a massive pay rise for MPs???
Answer: someone who knows English Law I think
Cam has put MPs pay in an independent body IPSA and they seem intent to stuff the MPs' mouths with gold (which they are allowed to do ) in order to secure their own knighthods and oil their way in the Lords

who says we dont have a democracy - look at Egypt
GPs are more useful and intelligent than MPs though
someone asks who is the mPs' employer

I am not sure if they have one although I can see they are not self employed and pay PAYE
in other words who do they sue for breach of contract ? I am not sure if they can.
