It really makes me sick that we have people like this in our country.

Why did we think so little of ourselves that we allowed people like this to come here.

This was such a great country, and so many people would want to come here, that we could afford to be choosy. But we weren't and we let any old scum in.

We really are slowly (quickly) being dragged down to a third world country.

I think if you watch the news or listen to the radio you might manage to pick things up and assimilate them.AP, I don't go around with my eyes shut. The Daily Mail is not a source I prefer, and I can tell the difference between the crims of our own ie. The Philpotts and their desperate bid to get more for nothing, and the crims from abroad who make a living from people smuggling, drugs, prostitution and begging on the streets with a baby and child gangs of pickpockets and the usual GBH of course.
// It makes me ashamed to live in this country, that there are some bigots out there who label an entire group of people based on the actions of a minority. You all ought to be ashamed of yourselves, VHG, AYG, Anto. //

Although I'm sure there are 'some bigots out there who label an entire group of people based on the actions of a minority', I can't see that being done with this question, or anywhere else on the thread. If I've missed the relevant comments, please point them out.
"But we weren't and we let any old scum in." - VHG

"Cant speak English, no skills, been a rapist or murderer or terrorist in your own country. Never mind we will take you in anyway." - VHG again

"We really are slowly being bred out of our Country." - Anto

"...we have more than our share of immigrants and unfortunately not the kind that will bring our economy in line.We have the worlds drop outs, psychos rapists gangs of foreign men grooming young girls, you name it..." -Askyourgran

"Lets stop this lot of scum downgrading our country. i live near boston, lincs, and the town has been taken over by eastern europeans. the poles are nice people, but most of the others are nasty, uncouth people." - annieigma

Enough for you, ludwig?

What's the difference with prior times? - though others would have us things were "better in the past"......immigration abuse has always happened - go right back through history into its depths and there have been plenty of sordid acts and abuse.

Yawn though not complacent.
I suggest we push off back to The Listener corner jim - how are you getting on with this weeks ;+)
Jim, thanks for italicising the only relevant bit to make it easier for me. None of the other quotes qualify.

But yep, fair enough - I stand corrected.
Finished it. Like I have with this "debate". It's pathetic and blinkered to blame immigration for all our problems, or even most of them, and at the same time casually overlook that this country was built on immigration or invasion. Of Celts, Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Normans, Irish, Poles, Western Europeans, Eastern Europeans, those from our colonies, and Africans in general. This country owes so much to immigration and while in the short term things may be difficult at times as people settle in, the long term benefits are huge.
May I ask, VHG, if this country had never allowed any of us in what, in your opinion, would it be like now? Have you never needed any of the immigrants who have settled here? Do you see it as having been all take on our part with little or no contribution to the economy, the culture......to Britain?
// Celts, Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Normans //
// in the short term things may be difficult at times as people settle in //

Yes. I think there were a few teething troubles for the indiginous population as the above people settled in. It's only after a few thousand years hindsight we can fully appreciate the long term benefits.

"Last one out of the UK, remember to turn off the lights....."

Quite right. We should stop all foreigners coming here, and send those, who are already here, back. Then all those people, who the rest of us are paying to sit at home doing nothing, can be sent to do the jobs that the foreigners have been doing.
This will a) reduce the crime rate b) cure unemployment at a stroke c) make Britain feel like the great country it was in 1901. We cannot always guess which foreigners are going to commit crime, so a no tolerance policy is the only one.

That leaves the problem of those who were born here. I am sure we can find a final solution, if we try hard enough.
Sieg and indeed Heil, Fred :)
Scanned the answers on this thread and the usual people have rightly and robustly responded to the question with admirable restrain.
"Why did we think so little of ourselves that we allowed people like this to come here."

This is a terribly stupid question. How on earth would you know in advance that someone was going to behave in such a way? Or do you mean that we should not let any foreigners in because they are all evil scum?
AB is fast turning into a place where racists can rant. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
I have a certain amount of sympathy for the philosophy of VHG.

To all intended immigrants into the UK:

If you have skills that we need.....WELCOME.

If you have a sound financial basis.......WELCOME.

However it would seem that the UK is a philanthropic "feeder" to the world.....health, benefits etc........that is fine......but do not complain if you find that these well intentioned attributes are costly...too costly.

Try getting into the U.S of A and Australia......this is a different ball game.

I do not consider myself a racist......just a pragmatic realist.
And there it is, in a nutshell. Thank you Sqad.
Which party will the members of the AB Popular Front allign themselves to now that the Labour Party has repositioned itself as the 'tough on immigration' party.
When I lived in America I couldn't wait to get out- it's a different ball game alright, never been so happy to leave anywhere. We need to be more like them like a hole in the head ( apologies to any US members).
That was not my impression of America OR the Americans that i met.
However....differing opinions are always invaluable.
