I thought it a great show, myself. That Cauldron was a technical marvel, the industrial age representation, the music, the fireworks, the humour and spectacle were great.

I haven't been a big fan of the money spent on bringing the olympics to the UK. Leaving that aside though, I think this opening ceremony set the stage very well.
Gness, I expected the usual same old, same old, and was so pleasantly surprised -it made me very proud to be British (and quirky)
Ringo's probably got a better voice.
George and John were the talented ones Anne, George especially in my opinion, but Paul loved the limelight.
Ha, ha, yes you are probably right kawakiri!!
Do you know....same old, same old is just right LL. Guess we`ve become used to big spectacular shows, very choreographed. This was a people ceremony and the joy of those taking part was a pleasure to watch.
Yes Lottie, in 1964 I never had a crush on Paul, it was always John first until he turned strange when he linked up with that awful Yoko Ono, so I transferred my adoration to George!
My friend Lorna has been in Paul`s bedroom. Or so she has been telling us since 1965. :-)
The big grass hill was obviously Britain, an island nation, separate from the rest.
I was disappointed not to see any burqas. Surely that has to be a sign of Great Britain's nationality
The New Yirk Times was quick to sim it up perfectly....

// With its hilariously quirky Olympic opening ceremony, a wild jumble of the celebratory and the fanciful; the conventional and the eccentric; and the frankly off-the-wall, Britain presented itself to the world Friday night as something it has often struggled to express even to itself: a nation secure in its own post-empire identity, whatever that actually is. //
Damn quality Britosh beeer, that should read...

// The New York Times was quick to sum it up perfectly //
I thought it was fantastic. The whole Industrial Revolution rendition was utterly brilliant with the 'molten' rings forming the Olympic symbol. The ceremony dipped a bit in the middle but finished with a magnificent flourish – I thought the fact that the Olympic Cauldron wasn't lit by a single individual but by young atheists nominated by previous medal winners was a quite brilliant idea. In fact this idea alone was for me the defining moment of the opening ceremony. Very British indeed.

And as for the Cauldron itself – wow! I think I can say, without fear of contradiction, that this was the most magnificent lighting and presenting of the Olympic Cauldron that we have ever seen. Hats off to the designers and engineers who conceptualised and constructed that wonderful fiery contraption.
Touch of 'allo 'allo there Gromit!! Only joking ;o)
100% Agree Birdie
Yes birdie - the unusual cauldron was a brilliant idea, loved it!
Haha great minds think alike Lottie - we hardly disagree do we? Now its time to go to bed, OH snoring his head off! :(
I've made a rather large faux pas in my above post - 'atheists' should read 'athletes' (!)
Night Ann. Sleep tight. I am off to get my ear plugs before retiring!!
Ha, ha, birdie. Never noticed. I read it as athletes!
