I very rarely think about my nationality – for the most part it is an irrelevance in my everyday life. But tonight I actually felt rather proud of Britain and of the people that built it and of what we have achieved as a relatively tiny nation. I also know we have much to be ashamed of. Sometimes our shameful past needs apologising for but sometimes we should stop and think about what our nation has achieved.

I would also like to comment on the inclusion of Tim Berners-Lee – the inventor of the internet as we know it and the reason why I and everyone else can do exactly what I am doing right now. This man's name should be known by everyone.

As a nation we have 'punched above our weight' to such a degree that to talk about it seems almost like bragging – a trait we generally deride as being unbecoming.

I shall leave it to Wikipedia to proclaim our nation's achievements...

Birdie. I`m Irish so qualified to say you cocked up now and again...who hasn`t. On the whole you`re a great bunch and a bit more national pride wouldn`t be out of place.

Tonight, more than any other Olympic Ceremony I have seen, was very much about sharing. In my experience you are very good at that. xx
I have a toblerone that I could share with you gness
Gnesss -

You're right. A great many British administrations have 'cocked up' enormously when it comes to your country of Ireland.

It's such a shame really – both the British and the Irish are quintessentially the same; same values of fair play; same sense or humour; same right/wrong moralistic ideals, etc. All completely messed up by a rich mix of religion and politics.
Toblerone share any time. :-)

Take religion and politics out and we get on very well. I come from a very touristy place and the British are all made very welcome because they are lovely people. Like you say we have a great deal in common.

There are of course still problems but we can`t keep looking to the past.
So I take it that you live in Ireland then gness.
I went there one day
The common tators must have known in advance what was going to happen so as to explain what was going on and what each thing ment .Knew two of them who was the guy sounded like jack dee
I too have always been very proud of my Country and its achievements, however I found the ceremony too boring to watch.
I thought Bruce Swordfight and Carol Vordeman were brill.
In thses days of austerity it was just right.

Stop maoning and get yourself a life.
so pleased to see that the majority totally disagree with the OP.

I thought it was utterly fantastic, from beginning to almost to the end. Sir Paul again? Purleazzze!
Well I enjoyed it, even though I didn't think I would!
Best opening ceremony yet, bar none. And I've seen plenty over very many years.
It was fantastic and I also agree with Birdie about Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Genius!
Well said tiggerblue.....I totally agree :-)
"The big grass hill was obviously Britain, an island nation, separate from the rest."

Gromit, I think someone said it was Glastonbury Tor, but as I've no idea what that looks like I'm not sure.

All in all a pretty spectacular opening ceremony and I only have a few very small complaints. Mr Bean is awful, and so was Macca - truly, truly dreadful, and so bl00dy predictable. Loved the trip through the ages, Tim Berners Lee, and most off all, the cauldron. A spectacular light show and some great nostalgia up here when the music played.
It was wonderful, but no good for those with the attention span of a gnat of course. What got me was the absolute joy on the faces of everyone taking part, especially all the athletes who looked so proud just to be there.
But who is it that keeps insisting that Paul McCartney is de rigeur at every national occasion? Truly cringe-making.
Nevertheless, overall, it was fantastic and seems to have been received well the world over pretty much.
It was great. The commentator Trevor was not much use but did make one sparkling contribution, off the cuff. Seeing the NHS dancers, he said that they were mostly doctors and NHS workers and added ' it must be difficult to choreograph people who have no natural rhythm' ! I say,old chap, steady on ! LOL
