Dunno about that you're forgetting the electorate's great ability to be totally fecking stupid ;-)
I did ask on an American site how it was that such a bad lot of candidates were competing and what the 'qualification' was to be one. There must be better people in the party. The answer came back "$$$$$$" !
Romney looks like the winner because he's he only one who looks and sounds a bit 'presidential'. He is also nearer to the middle ground, and it's the middle ground, where the undecides are, that settles elections there.
He introduced a healthcare scheme, when he was governor, which is much like 'Obamacare'. The rest of them think that universal healthcare is socialist. So he's a covert socialist !LOL. But the middle ground likes the idea of healthcare. He dodges criticism by saying that he would let each state decide on whether to have it locally, so its not a 'big government', federal, measure ( Republicans hate 'big government'). He affects to be 'extreme' to the party faithful,to get the nomination, while planning to be liberal or 'socialist', in their terms, and it should hold him in good stead. The rest are as extreme as they sound.
In the early days of the campaign, I must have misheard a news report and for a fraction of a second thought that RuPaul had decided to run......:o/

Quite, NOX, that's how we ended up with Tony Blair and co for 13 years.
JTH Don't think RuPaul would be a bad alternative in comparision.

These guys are seriously scary, In a country of 300m people these are the only ones the Republican party could come up with for a presidential nomination.

Their manifestos seems to rest on name calling, character assasination and criticism. This appears to be legitamised by the media.
Looks to me like Obama is home and dry for a second term.
My apologies, Zhukov, for temporarily diverting your thread, but I really must ask...
Is that you, the original FredPuli, in reincarnated form? If so, whatever happened to you?
It's actually Santorum... he's been a senator from the State of Pennsylvania for several years. Youngest of the set... (In Italian means... " From the medieval first name Santoro, derived from the Latin word Sanctus = Saint, the genitive plural form is "Sanctorum", used also to indicate the All Saints feast. Possibly connected to someone acting as a saint, or who has connection with religious things (a sacristan)".

A large segment of our society believes "Obama Care" to be socialist in nature... it demands certain things that are being tested before our Supreme Court in the very near future. When the law was enacted, Obama had a majority in both Houses of Congress and the bill was put together in secret congerences... the Speaker of the House said at the time... "Just pass the Bill and we can learn what's in it later"... unique concept...
Mitt Romney ...

Too wealthy for comfort?

Too Mormon for comfort?

We underestimate him at our peril. He is very determined, very rich, very well backed, and not afraid to punch below the belt. He's spent something like £9m on advertising simply to badmouth the other Republicans!
For Quizmonster: Thanks for asking. Yes, I am the original fredpuli. Accept no substitute. I moved house, was offline for a while; technical problems difficult to solve; and, frankly, didn't bother much about it, using Blackberry. Now set up here again .Opened a new account for fredpuli rather than try to revive the old one.
Well, good to see you again, Fred; your protracted 'disappearance' did not go unnoticed and I'm sure you will once more be informing us with your legal wit and wisdom.
Again, my apologies, Zhukov,

Well it looks like Mitt will be - The Man who would be President? - seems all it takes is Mountains of cash from very rich friends, and Blanket coverage, via TV "attack" Ads,rallies and billboards - roundly condemning, and besmirching the ideas and character of "Team Mitt"rivals.

The bloke himself is variously described as "Like the Tin Man,he has no heart",a wonk, more at home with numbers, not so good with "people"!

He is known to "flip-flop"!He first tried out for High Office, running against Ted Kennedy,in Massachusetts.Naturally, being a Bishop in the Mormon Church,Mitt Romney would have preached Anti-Abortion - but that dog don"t hunt,in Liberal Massachusetts - so he became relaxed about Abortion! - now he has flipped back to Pro-life!

He is also campaigning on a "Massive Job recruitment drive for Americans"

Yet the vast amount of his $250m?fortune has been made by "asset stripping".Buying companies, selling the best bits, and sacking 1000"s of skilled workers, from long established/family firms - selling to faceless Mult-Nationals - reaping massive profits - one quick deal was worth $102m - to the Tin Man!

April 2011,Trump told CNN that Romney was"a small business guy",and that Romneys company,Bain Capital, had caused problems for the companies it had bought.

"He"d buy companies,he"d close companies,he"d get rid of jobs",Mr Trump said.

Now he endorses Romney for the Presidential nomination....Go figure!
