Not sure where to post this really.

Doh since I took a couple of foreign hols I seem to be on a phone list...these nuisance callers really start off lovely like they are old friends talking about kids, families etc; clever that eh?

10 mins down the line and I have spelt out "NO" in many endearing ways to the lovely person's manager (who comes on the phone to seal the non existant deal) they get the right hump that I don't want to part with any hard earned cash and I get the a~~eache that they are not listening, and the phone call is over...Grrrrrr!!

How can I remove myself from these cold call lists... does anyone know??

If they are from abroad you can't do anything about it apart from throwing yourself at their mercy when they ring. Register at TPS to stop any calls from the UK.
If they are from abroad- do you have any toddlers around? These calls are fabulous for keeping the tots entertained for a few minutes. Pass the phone to them and let them babble away to their hearts content to your caller.
if the calls are from abroad the only way to stop them is change your number

when i am asked for a phone number i give people a mobile number this mobile is set to silent so never gets answered, i just check to see if anyone has called that i want to speak to

i never give my home number out
TPS as above ,but if the calls are coming from overseas it does not work. I always say ' no thank you, please remove this number form your lists. Thank you' and put the phone down. Usually works.

If you haven't already, get yourself registered on the Telephone Prefererence Service

It seems to stop some calls but NOT all calls, especially those from abroad. Still, you can report any cold callers to them if they become a nuisance.

You usually can find out who the number is by using the website "who calls me?". If it is a common complaint someone usually posts the company information so you can contact them directly to get yourselves removed from the list, so it is worth scrolling through the forum discussions on the site.

If you ask them by phpne, letter or e-mail they should, by law, remove you from their lists - and anyone who is TPS registered should not be on these lists as they are supposed to be TPS cleansed lists. It is not always the case though.

Unfortunately these companies sell lists to each other so it seems if you are one list your details get passed around.

When I suspect a cold call I either leave it to the answermachine - which makes them call off, or if I answer, I ask them who they are, what company they are calling from and where they got my number. This usually throws them as it is "off script" from their sales patter. They get a minute or so with me and then the phone goes down - just be firm and tell them you are not interested in whatever they are selling and to remove your number from their lists.

Good luck
I have my own 'script' by the telephone and after asking for their own and companies details I tell them that I will listen to them after they have listened and agreed to invest in my wonderful scheme to make a handsome profit by purchasing a plot of land which is just waiting for planning permission. If they say that they are abroad, I will give them the opportunity to purchase a timeshare instead, so that when they visit the UK they needn't stay in hotels. I don't know why, but they always terminate the call before I get the chance to hear what they have to say!
Put the phone down as soon as you know its a nuisance call?
