Rapists could have their sentences halved if they admit to their crime?

I think there are a couple of ways at looking at this.....
Presently, the conviction rate for Rape cases is depressingly low. The majority of victims have to undergo the harrowing ordeal of a rape trial only to see their attacker acquitted because the very nature of the crime, in the majority of cases, is "he said, she said".
Whilst the ideal situation in 'every' rape case ought to be a conviction and be followed by a hefty prison sentence, perhaps some of the victims would rather have it acknowledged, in court, that they were violated and see the person responsible serve some time in prison, rather than walk away scot-free at the end of a lengthy trial ?

I agree Bobbi. The trouble with rape is it often so difficult to prove, if the rapist denies it and it cant be proved he walks away to do the same again, if he admits it and gets half the sentence he has maybe learned a lesson.
Personally I think there should be an option, a reduced sentence and castrate them, especially for child molesters.

Even in our so-called 'enightened' soceity, there is still a massive stigma attatched to rape. Some meen still perceive it as a woman's fantasy, some women believe that a raped woman must have 'asked for it' - and the truth is of cvourse a million miles away.
If we could educate young people that rape is nothing to do with sex, it might be a way to shift attitudes away from the sexual connotations that rape has because it involves intercourse, even though that is involuntary.
We shouold start putting rape in its proper context - it's not about sex, it's about control and violation - it's robbery with violence.
Time will tell if the new approach works - it is an impossible moral dilema, and the hanging brigade - as usual - bring nothing useful to the debate.

Unfortunately not a" million miles" away..........some women, I don't know how many, DO indeed fantasise about being raped and do ask their partners to enact the rape scene, but please don't ask for "links" as this is purely a personal opinion based upon life experiences.
I am against the new proposal as the true rapist will have his sentence halved and the "contentious" case, innocent person, may have to plead guilty or take his chance in a court.

Yes I do remember the conversation of last time...........but if a "kinky sex" session turned "awkward" then she could cry rape.
My answer was basically aimed at Andy's comment in his initial paragraph that a raped woman must have asked for it being "a million miles " from the truth.

I agree that reducing the sentence for a guilty plea could have benefits of more convictions, not fewer. However, I thought it was already the case that judges could impose longer sentences on people who pleaded innocent and were found guilty. So I'm not sure what's different about this proposal, apart from the shorter sentence ...
There was another case recently (not rape, but still a violent assault) which highlighted the use of the Home Detention Curfew (http://www.bournemouthecho....frenzied_attack__reeased_after_ten_weeks):

So if somebody was going to get six years for rape (i.e. longer than average), had it halved to three years, then qualified for HDC, they could be out in only nine months. That mustn't be allowed to happen ...
