Islamic Intolerance?

The religion of peace is at it again.

Some bible bashing Christian moron burns the Koran in Florida and thousands of Muslims in Afghanistan go completely berserk, kill several people who were unlucky enough to be 'on duty' at the UN commission in Mazar-e Sharif. Amongst those killed are a Swedish guy and a Norwegian chap – hardly representative of the USA...

I don't think it's an unreasonable question to ask: why do some followers of the Islamic faith react so aggressively, violently and murderously to the smallest perceived slight on their belief?

No we don't joeluke, which was entirely the point of my post.

Arabic people are very very different from us - they react differently to cultural, and especially religious offence, so although that in no way excuses this mob behaviour, we should try and accept that this is the way a small minory are.

The same as small minorities here chase after police vans with arrested people in them - and we know what wouold happen if they got hold of the occupant.
So we should just accept that they murder innocents merely because others have insulted their religion?

Not very civilised is it?
Nobody's accepting it JL - we are all appalled at it - but I don't know what we could do about it, since it took place in Afghanistan. Rank and file Muslims across the world
Equally - what could we do about the Pastor? He's not at all repentant, he just can't see that his narrowminded actions set the flame which started all this off.
^^ sorry, sent too soon - rank and file Muslims are not represented well by this extremist minority.
Of course not joeluke - and if you re-read my posts you will see that I do not for one moment condone this savagery - i mrely attempt to give it a little cultural context.

Explain it - hopefully, excuse it - never.
despite aog's claim that they would have done it anyway regardless of the Koran burning - no they wouldn't, and they didn't. Terry Jones sought a reaction like this and he got it: the deaths of innocent people. He should go back to Monty Python.

beso's claim that all believers have this blood on their hands is nonsense. Might as well have said all Britons have the blood on their hands because they invaded Afghanistan in the first place.
The original question was..
// why do some followers of the Islamic faith react so aggressively, violently and murderously to the smallest perceived slight on their belief? //

Because they're ignorant peasants who've been subjected to religious brainwashing from birth, manipulated and whipped up to a frenzy by unscrupulous leaders for their own twisted and malicious purposes.

I think that “Tuddypat” above has hit the nail squarely on the head.

It never ceases to amaze me how many apparently moderate people in the media and on this website in particular attempt to justify the murder of other human beings because of an insult.

When has murder been a fitting punishment for insulting someone's sensibilities or belief?

It sickens me to read words to the effect of, “... well, this guy knew what would happen if he burnt it – he's got blood on this hands, etc, etc...”. This pathetic hand-wringing has got to stop. Anyone who effectively says, “If you insult Islam then this is what you get... so don't insult Islam!” is a coward and a fool.

Gromit said, “... His [Pastor Jones'] goal is purely to provoke violence.”. Was it? Was it really? Is that what Pastor Jones intended? Are you saying that Pastor Jones burnt a copy of the Koran with the specific intention of inciting Muslims to murder people?

I am sick and tired of Islam having special status when it comes to criticism. The only reason it has this special status is precisely because of the violence everyone knows will occur if 'the religion of peace' is insulted.
I am now sick of the fact that you cannot turn on your tele or radio without hearing something about Islam. This does not happen with other religions, so why?

Keyplus:

“I think "free speech" should not mean freedom to insult. Especially when you know that few people will not like that.”

Actually, that's precisely what 'free speech' means – the freedom to insult. For example, some people living the UK don't like the fact that we have a monarchy – they would prefer a republic. The people who don't want a monarchy have the right to make fun of or even insult the present head of state. That is their right in a society where we have free speech. They do not and should not be murdered for expressing their views.

You continue, “... Although I will not kill someone for burning Quran right in front of me but that person must understand that for me that is not just a book. Someone who like drawing cartoons of Muhammad (pbuh) must understand that Muhammad (pbuh) is not just another human who is long gone for 1.8 billion people.”

It's very decent of you to promise not to murder someone who insults your religion. How very generous of you!

Continued....

You must understand that copies of the Koran are precisely that – COPIES. They are not the original; they are merely copies and as such, their destruction by any means cannot possibly warrant a violent reprisal.

It's akin to someone burning the flag of a country they despise. They burn the flag and dance about chanting, 'death to... [whoever]' in a stupid symbolic gesture that proves only three things: first, the flag they have paid for is now their own possession and belongs to them; second, they've just burn their own flag; and third, the flag seller is laughing all the way to the bank.
Both Pastor Jones and the murderers in Afghanistan are ignorant people following dogmatic and irrational superstition, and personally I condemn them both for such - it is them and their ilk hindering progress in societies everywhere. But as others have said, the important distinction here is that Jones has not killed anyone. There is a limit to which you can defer responsibility, and I think to hold him responsible for these events does quite substantially stretch it.

While Jones has done so in an ignorant and frankly detestable way, the logical conclusion of the argument seems to me that we should avert making challenges to the excesses of extreme Islam: If it's irresponsible to burn a koran because of the response it'll provoke. then surely it follows that it's irresponsible to do anything that'll provoke a response? Where does that leave us? Nobody seems to disagree on our loathing for radical Islam (or even some aspects of mainstream Islam) - and if that's the case we can either challenge it (and begrudgingly allow morons like Jones) or we can't.
*Pastor Sapp. Got 'em mixed up.

I think that your post headed by the words:

/// I think that “Tuddypat” above has hit the nail squarely on the head.///

May I say also your post also 'hit the nail squarely on the head', it was an excellent post, and nothing further could be added, well done.

But let me add, that it amazes me that a little while ago, some ABers were 'up in arms' over the fact that a couple because of their religious beliefs, had dared to refuse entry to their hotel, to an homosexual couple.Should we also try and accept that this is the way a small minority are, as andy-hughes suggests?.

Perhaps we should also be more tolerant of others religious beliefs?

It is beyond belief that we have some on AB, almost excusing these Islamic savages, for their murderous deeds, just because their religious beliefs had been offended.

It all comes down to this.....

my imaginary friend is better than yours,

Until people wake up .and stop beliveing all this nonsense then am afraid they will continue to kill each other over it.
It all comes down to this,

Do not try telling birdie when it comes to Islam. You are either with him or against him. And since Naomi left (as she had her own reasons) there is double pressure on birdie. I hope he has got pay rise too.
