The recent US election clamour leads me to think perhaps our own UK parties might consider changing their names. For example Labour could become the Socialist Party and Conservatives the Democratic Party.
It could make people think more about what principles they are voting for rather than individuals. No disrespect meant but the name 'labour' does imply a workhouse quality. What changes if any would you suggest?

But if they did that both could be prosecuted under the trades description act
Maybe Labour would argue they are the Democratic Party.
Anyway, I don't see any way you could enforce such a change
Brands are very powerful. I doubt either Labour or Conservative would wish to change their name. I could imagine the Lib-Dems wanting to, though :)
Well our Labour Party has rebranded. First it was Labour, the New Labour, then New Old Labour and now Labour again.
but the Republicans believe in democracy and Democrats believe in the republic.
And lots of labour supporters would not call themselves socialists.
The Labour party hasn't really been socialist since clause iv was abandoned

And there is a socialist party already

The Tories aren't particularly democratic either! Certainly not where the House of Lords is concerned!
Bring back Whigs, I say. Good, memorable, brand name, means absolutely nothing relevant (just like Labour and Conservative),travels well (good for exports), has an air of tradition... and talking of history, why not Levellers for the Labour Party (or was that Old Labour)?
wasn't it Evelyn Waugh who said he withdrew his support for the Conservatives when he realised they hadn't turned back the clock even a single minute?
