Has anyone got any more convincing theories about the meaning of this song (answers in response to a previous query about it seem to focus on Oliver Cromwell - the references seem more modern to me).

it definitely refers to Cromwell
...and the fact that the English invasion of Ireland that Cromwell started is still in place.
'The Civil War' is what I've been told...
Are we talking about the Elvis Costello Version ?? If so surely that was about paid mercenaries around the worlds troublespots
It was an anti Vietnam war song. And the pointlessness of war in general.
