Roundheads was actually a derogatory term for the Parliamentarian army. As the puritans were generally on the side of Parliament, the Royalists used the term as an insult to all those who fought against them.

Similarly, cavaliers was also a term coined by Parliament to insult the royalists.

Parliamentarian forces were brought together by 1645 and the New Model Army was formed. In the context of your crossword, that is obviously not ten letters and Roundheads is the (inaccurate) answer they are looking for.
